George Bell

1861 - 1930

Flat jockey George Bell was born in Sunderland in 1861. He was apprenticed to John Osborne at Middleham and rode two big race winners, the 1879 Manchester Cup on Lartington, and the 1880 Ebor Handicap on Novice.

Always known as ‘Geordie’, he went to Austria in 1883 and rode there for seven years.

He died in Newmarket on January 14, 1930, aged 68. He was buried at Newmarket Cemetery three days later.
