Jack Brennan

1896 - 1969

Lightweight jockey John  Joseph Brennan (always known as Jack) rode the 1921 2,000 Guineas winner Craig an Eran in the light blue, pink sash colours of Lord Astor. This was his only Classic win.

An incredibly unlucky Classic jockey, he was placed in seven others though luck played no part when Steve Donoghue comprehensively outrode him in the 1921 Derby. He had better luck when aboard Saltash, winning the 1925 Eclipse, and, at Royal Ascot, winning the New Stakes on Ramtapa in 1937.

He quit the saddle after the war, still being able to weigh out at 7 stone 11 pounds, and died in a Marlborough hospital.

Craig an Eran was the sire of 1932 Derby winner April the Fifth.

Jack was born in Hyde, Cheshire and became apprenticed to Alec Taylor. He looked after his money and built himself a house close to the entrance at Manton. He named his home after his classic winner.

He died on March 14 1969, aged 73.
