Jump jockey Grant Cockburn rode regularly for Fife-based trainer Nick Alexander and amassed 75 winners under rules during his career.
His last success was an 80-1 shock victory aboard the Alexander-trained Ryedale Racer at Kelso on February 19, 2021, which saw him ride out his claim.
He signed off with four rides at Ayr on May 4, 2021. His final mount, Memors, was some 30 lengths clear at halfway in the National Hunt Flat Race, but those early exertions took their toll and the mare faded to finish seventh.
After dismounting, Grant announced he had decided to quit the saddle at the age of 28 to pursue a new career as a landscape gardener.
He told Racing TV: “Through my girlfriend’s parents, their friends have a firm in Edinburgh so I have been out and done a couple of days to see that I’d enjoy it so the plan is to start with them, all being well.”
