John Boardman Jnr

c1907-1929

John Edwin Boardman only rode one winner during a brief career that lasted from June 1923 to July 1925. This was in stark contrast to his father, John Edward Boardman (1876-1909), who amassed 43 winners at the start of the 20th century. Sadly, they both died young.

Born circa 1907, John Edwin Boardman was apprenticed to Ossie Bell who trained at Lambourn. He had his first ride in public when Glarryford ran unplaced in the Berks Selling Handicap Plate at Newbury on June 13, 1923.

His big day came at that year’s autumn meeting at Birmingham on October 2, recording his sole success when Indigo won the Tamworth Plate by four lengths from Kingston Hill, the mount of Freddie Fox.

The following season he had a new boss, Newmarket trainer Reg Day, but no wins. He was granted a full licence in 1925 but there was to be no change in his fortunes. His final ride was on Forfar Lassie, who finished unplaced in the Saxham Stakes at Newmarket on July 14, 1925.

John Boardman Junior died in Newmarket on April 1, 1929, aged 21.
