Royce Burrows

Royce first appeared on a racecard on Tuesday May 21, 1940, when riding Dain in an Apprentice Handicap at Newmarket.

Born in 1924, Royce was retained by Captain Cecil Boyd-Rochfort at the Freemason Lodge stables in Newmarket.

His riding weight in 1947 was 7 st. 13 lb. and Long-Riggan was the best horse he'd ridden up to then.

Royce served three and a half years in the R.A.F. during the war.

He was up before the Stewards on Saturday June 5, 1954, after riding Osborne in the Winston Churchill Stakes.

Osborne was to be the pacemaker for stable companion Premonition, ridden by W. H. Carr, but so well was Royce going on Osborne that it took all the royal jockey's strength to get up and win, beating Royce by an inch. An enquiry followed.

Royce ceased riding that year.
