Richard Brown

Newmarket-based Richard John Brown was born on April 4, 1948, and served a three-year apprenticeship with Tom Waugh and a further two with David Thom.

He only rode one winner, Panama Rag, trained by David Thom, in the Bleasby Novices’ Hurdle at Southwell on September 3, 1968. He did beat two top jockeys in the process, for second was Cali, ridden by Terry Biddlecombe, and third was Ground Frost, the mount of Barry Brogan.

That one win was scant reward for his efforts and left the game soon afterward.
