Joey Brown

Joseph Henry Brown, always known as Joey, was born in Devizes, Wiltshire on June 18, 1963.

His first win came on Green Memory at Catterick on October 16, 1981.

Although easily winning the 1982 Crown Plus Two Apprentices Championship in 1982 and again in 1983 (when it was then known as the Daily Mirror Apprentices Championship), Joey's career never really kicked off.

Joey, of 21, Kingston Drive, Norton, Malton, had five successful years as an apprentice to Ian Balding; he then spent one and a half disappointing ones with R. M. Whittaker.

The most amount of winners he rode in any one season was 14 in 1982.

He rode the decent horse Mailman to five of its eight victories but remained little used by outside stables. He also won the 1983 Zetland Gold Cup on Free Press (May 30).

On November 16, 1985, he married Rachel Elizabeth Ann.

He was arrested in Newmarket in April 2008.

The former apprentice, who once rode for the Queen, was wanted by the Spanish police in connection with an investigation following the discovery of £2 million worth of cannabis in a barn he used in Fuengirola where he had set up as trainer at the local Spanish track Mijas.

Aged 44, he appeared at Westminster Magistrates on 15 April.

He was extradited to Spain at the end of April. In July 2008 he was sentenced to five years' imprisonment by a Spanish court in Malaga following with the seizure of 720 kilos of cannabis and two stolen vehicles.

Riding Green Memory for Ian Balding at Windsor in August 1981, Joey mistook the winning post and presented the race to Crimson Royale. A picture of misery, the unfortunate apprentice was soundly booed after as the crowd vented their anger.
