Frank Brown

1891 - 1963

Eton-educated Frank Brown, born at Atherstone in 1891, was the elder of two brothers whose derring-do and courage shone during the 1920s.

His first winner was Lord Simon at Atherstone Hunt on March 24, 1909.

He rode fewer winners than his brother Harry but was generally considered to be the better hurdles jockey. Among his notable victories was Assaroe in the 1923 County Hurdle (March 7).

Frank was the champion amateur in 1916.

His riding career ended with a fall at Stratford which fractured his spine. He recovered sufficiently to ride and hunt, but not to race. Under the circumstances, it was natural for him to turn to training and, taking the Bourton-on-the-Hill stable (from where Emblem, the Grand National winner, had been sent out) he trained the 1935 Champion Hurdle winner, Lion Courage, and the 1933 National Hunt Handicap Chase victor, Society.

During the First World War, Frank served in the Royal Dragoons.

He died on June 2, 1963, aged 71. He left £10,621
