Charles was born in Darlington c 1863 and enjoyed wins on Health Bird, 1889 Royal Hunt Cup; Gladstone, 1881 Manchester November Handicap, Greenbank, 1884 Ascot Stakes and Border Minstrel in the 1883 Queen's Vase.
He was apprenticed to Fred Bates.
Charles twice won the German Derby, dead-heating in 1893, then winning outright on Tuki in 1901.
