Edward Bendelow

Edward Bendelow was born in Chester-Le-Street, County Durham in 1949, the son of a wagon driver. He became apprenticed to Ernie Weymes at Middleham and had his first ride in public on Brass Finisher at Pontefract on August 23, 1965, finishing ninth of the eleven runners.

The following month, Brass Finisher provided 16-year-old Edward with a first success on his second ride when getting up close home to win the Markington (3yo) Handicap at Ripon on September 11, 1965. Despite that early promise, he did not have another ride in public for the remainder of the season.

Rising weight caused Edward to switch codes, and he held a National Hunt jockey’s licence for the 1967/68 and 68/69 seasons. He had a few rides over hurdles but no winners and eventually faded from the racing scene with just that one winner to his name.
