Anthony Beech

Anthony Beech made his racecourse debut riding Blockade for Newmarket trainer Michael Bell at Yarmouth on Wednesday, May 27 1998.

He won the 1999 November Handicap on Flossy.

His final ride came on Sovereignty at Southwell on February 3, 2005.

What surprised many good judges is the fact that he never rode out his claim.

These included trainer Gary Moore, whose Stoppes Brow the 18-year-old apprentice guided to victory at Epsom.

'The horse can be a difficult ride for even the most senior of jockeys.' he said. 'He needs to be held up, preferably with plenty of cover, and then brought with a late run, often past rivals who are starting to tire and wander.'

Anthony followed his riding instructions to the letter, Stoppes Brow completing a 38-1 double for the young apprentice - he had earlier won on Queen's Bench.

He grew up in Bishop's Stortford and enjoyed riding ponies as a child. When his mother saw an item about the British Racing School on the television, she suggested he give it a go.

Anthony picks up the story.

'As soon as I got into the yard I fell in love with it. The school taught me the basics and Michael Bell is really good with apprentices.'

But it didn't work out. Anthony had the talent but, in a crowded market, was unable to establish himself.

It was all over in early 2005.

He went to Florida where, at some time, he was arrested for a cheque scam.
