Malcolm William Barrett, of East Allington, Totnes, was born on February 2, 1955, and was retained by D. T. Lewis.
He served a three-year apprenticeship with David Barons and rode his first winner, Patent, 33-1, at Newton Abbot in 1978.
Never fated to be a prolific winner, he scored seven times in the 1978-79 season.
On June 16, 1979, he married Sylvia Beavil.
Away from the racecourse, Malcolm enjoyed golf and squash.
