3rd Grade News
Dear Third Grade Parents,
Our readers will continue to categorize books by genre and they will choose just the right books for them. We encourage our readers to find a special spot at home to read for at least 30 minutes every day. Readers don’t just read books, they also build reading lives. Our mathematicians have been sharing their mathematical thinking by solving addition and subtraction facts. The students sorted and classified their own glyphs and they collected the data in a bar graph.
In social studies, the students focused on elaborating their social contract by including the Tiger Way. The students have been reflecting on the class routines and rules. They discussed the importance of classroom helpers and how to build a learning environment.

Learning Goal
What mathematicians are doing at school...
The students will continue to review and explore subtraction facts. We focus on using the subtraction table to identify types of facts and to learn and to revisit effective and efficient strategies for these facts. As the students engage in Problem and Investigation, they will be using the number rack to solve problems and to model their thinking. They make generalizations about the number relationships in groups of related facts to develop number sense and fact fluency with confidence. The students will also develop algebraic thinking as they look for patterns and relationships and determine unknown quantities on both sides of the equal sign in an equation eg. 9 + ____ = 12 - 3 = _____
