4th Grade News
Dear 4th Grade Parents,
We are very excited to have finished our first writing unit of the school year! Students celebrated by sharing with each other their fiction stories and giving each other helpful feedback. Now that our students are starting a new Reading Unit, they are expected to read at least 30 minutes every day a NonFiction Text.

What readers & writers are doing at school...
Did you know that a kid’s reading life should be ⅔ nonfiction and ⅓ fiction? We begin a new Reading Unit this next week where we will educate our fourth graders to have the skills necessary to help in the research projects that will be necessary if the upcoming generation is going to solve the many problems that are fast descending on us; such as flooding, global terrorism, the growing gap between rich and poor, and more other challenges. Work learning and citizenship in the 21st century demand that we all know how to think- reason, analyze, weigh evidence, problem solve - and to communicate effectively. These are becoming essential survival skills for all of us and our fourth graders will have the opportunity to grow as future citizens in this new Reading Unit. They will do this first by Reading and Learning with Intensity! Students will learn how to read nonfiction differently by making a commitment to learning from a text, by making connections between what they already know and care about, and the text.
