5th Grade News

Dear 5th-grade families,

We have an exciting week Dec. 4-8 coming up! Spirit Week will be held from Monday through Thursday, and our students have the opportunity to embrace their imagination and creativity the entire week. No school is on Friday, December 8th due to the local holiday La Purisima. We are having our Winter Picnic on December 15th, and you will receive more information on it next week.

Weekly Learning Goals & Tasks

English Literacy

Learning Goal

Synthesize information across topics within, a single text and across texts. Writing main ideas and details to develop strong thinking.

What readers & writers are doing at school...

Readers will learn to synthesize information across subtopics, within a single text and across texts. They will explain how parts of the text work together and determine why one part of the text is important to the rest of the text. They will also understand that they need to write ideas and details to develop strong thinking and identify what they really want to say about their topic.

What readers & writers could be doing at home...

Spanish Literacy

Learning Goal

Escribir conclusión y glosario del libro. Revisar, editar y publicar el texto.

What readers & writers are doing at school...

What readers & writers could be doing at home...

Los escritores publicarán el texto digitalizado en la plataforma BOOK CREATOR. (Se compartirá el código de acceso a los estudiantes)

Mathematics

Learning Goal

Investigate and use the area model for division

What mathematicians are doing at school...

Mathematicians will continue to investigate the area model for division. They begin by using base ten area pieces to model and solve division problems, and then move to using label sketches on base ten grid paper. Mathematicians will review for their Unit 3 Post-Assessment.

Home Connection pgs.  57-63, 65 and 66 Extra Practice: Student Book pgs. 105, 108, 111 and 112

Science or Social Studies

Learning Goal

Understand how gravity operates.

What tigers are doing at school..

Scientists will be exploring gravity through a variety of different experiences and tests. They will also research gravity to learn more about the experiences they have had to make connections between the two of them.  After they have a basic understanding of the phenomena they will then create their own working model that demonstrates that gravity is always pulling things toward the earth.

What tigers could be doing at home...

Continue building on knowledge by dialoguing with household members about all the things that each person already knows, or is learning, about gravity; share glows (what went well) and grows (what could be improved) about the experiments conducted in class.

Social Emotional Learning Program

Learning Goal

Friends and learners will explore what it means to value another person’s emotions, thoughts, and actions.

What friends and learners are doing at school..

Friends and learners will pair up and share three things that they are good at and write these on one side of the page then write down their partner’s favorite activities or what they value about their partner on the right side, with a plus sign in front of each activity.

What friends and learners could be practicing at home...

Brainstorm skills that you can use to connect what you are good at to your feelings, thoughts, and actions, which influence what you value.
