3rd Grade News
Dear Parents,
Third graders are busy exploring different mentors’ texts to strengthen their writing essay skills. They continue to generate bold claims or thesis and are moving forward to gathering significant evidence to support their thesis. In addition, they experiment on adding transitional phrases and words to make their essays more interesting and meaningful. Furthermore, they are also developing their vocabulary skills during read aloud and phonics sessions. Learning prefixes and suffixes are the highlight of their vocabulary sessions.
In math, we have just launched unit 5 which focuses on multiplication, finding area and perimeter. As we embark in this new unit, we encourage our students to practice their multiplication facts.
Please continue to practice with your child telling the time at home. Here is the Interactive Clock to help you do that.
Please remember to read with your child every day for 30 minutes.

Writers will continue to write their essays. This time they will do this work by considering the characters' relationships, the lessons they learn, and their traits. Writers will flash draft essays focusing on the structure that these should have. An engaging introduction, evidence across the text, and a conclusion.

Unit 5 introduces students to division, working from what they already know about multiplication to understand division as the inverse operation. Mathematicians will use arrays to show the area. The students will work on story problems to practice multiplication facts and repeated addition.

We are exploring world geography through the compelling question “Where are we?” This question sparks students’ intellectual curiosity through the study of geographic location and the impact of humans on their environment. Working with evidence from sources, students should understand that, although we can be in different “places,” our impact on Earth is worth considering.
