1st Grade News

Dear First Grade families,

We are happy to see the growth in our Tigers! They have been working hard in Math to sort and compare 3-D shapes by attributes. In reading, they continue to be the boss of their reading. We strongly encourage our students to practice reading at home and write about what is happening in the books they read.

Weekly Learning Goals & Tasks

English Literacy

Learning Goal

Reading: Imagine detalis to help understand New Vocabulary.

Phonics: Relate and apply what you know about reading all the way across words and know common ways that words end.

What readers & writers are doing at school...

Reading: Boss readers will continue to read fiction and nonfiction books, monitoring themselves to pause not only at words to decode but spending more time on words to think about what they mean. Drawing on their own mental images.

Phonics: Readers and writers will explore how important it is to read all the way across words and know common ways that words end. With that knowledge and with a peek at the first letter of an ending, you can guess what the ending might be and then check your guesses as you read on.

What readers & writers could be doing at home...

Reading: Read these sentences, take the time to think aboutand imagine what is going on to better understand the meaning of the word.

Phonics: Use what we practice about “Common Word Endings” to read the book “Hey Moon, You are Blocking My Sun”. Now from the book, get examples of those endings.

Write them in your homework notebook (Reading Response).
