5th Grade News

Dear Parents, 

We have a very exciting week ahead of us. Please take note of the following dates: Monday October 23rd, 5th grade is having their Narrative Writing Celebration in which students will read their pieces to 3rd and 4th grade students (the celebration is for students only). 5th graders may come in their regular clothes on this day. We are excited to inform you we are having our first Math Parent School experience happening Wednesday, October 25th. Please check the sign-up sheet under "Reminders" (Homebase website). We would also like to remind you about the Fall Festival on October 27th. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us. See you soon!

Readers will orient themselves to complex nonfiction texts and then hold their initial ideas loosely as they read forward, remaining open to revision as they encounter new information.

Spanish Literacy

Learning Goal

Los escritores diseñarán un plan de escritura informativa. Organizaránla estructura de un libro y escribirán un borrador del libro informativo.

What readers & writers are doing at school...

Los escritores de textos informativos harán una lluvia de ideas sobre el tema que desarrollarán en su libro. Diseñarán las páginas para escribir el contenido de su texto y redactarán el borrador desarrollando sus ideas principales.

Conexión con el hogar. Lectura sobre el tema de su libro para ampliar información.

Mathematics

Learning Goal

Finding common denominators to add and subtract fractions

What mathematicians are doing at school...

Mathematicians will find common denominators in order to add and subtract fractions. They will also complete Unit 2 Post-Assessment on "Expressions, Equations, and Volume." Towards the end of the week, they will start Unit 3 by solving a problem string that involves whole numbers and decimal addition using the "Give & Take Strategy." 

What mathematicians could be doing at home...

Science or Social Studies

Learning Goal

Make observations and gather data from legume experiment.

What tigers are doing at school..

Scientists are conducting an experiment to see how plants grow in different types of habitats. They are using this phenomena and concept to learn how to plan and conduct an experiment including how to collect data.

What tigers could be doing at home...

Dialogue with household members about any surprising observations with the legume experiment; try a similar experiment at home using different substrates from those in the classroom.

Social Emotional Learning Program

Learning Goal

Friends and learners will learn how to respond to challenging situations or situations in which you might make a mistake with helpful, optimistic self-talk to think and feel in ways that will help us act in ways to reach our goals.

What friends and learners are doing at school..

Friends and learners are going to create helpful self-talk in response to challenging situations or mistakes that we might make that may cause us to experience unpleasant emotions.

What friends and learners could be practicing at home...

Think about a challenging situation you have experienced and your self-talk during it. How would your actions have been different if your self-talk had been different?
