1st Grade News
Dear first Grade Parents,
Our students continue to strengthen their reading skills by tackling more challenging words and thinking about what is happing. When reading at home, have your child re-read familiar stories and books to strengthen fluency. Mathematicians are using strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems such as; counting for a larger number, doubles plus or minus one. See you later at the Fall Festival!

English Literacy
Learning Goal
Reading: Break words into parts to figure out longer words.
PHONICS: Focus on studying what you have learned about CVCe words with the vowel “I” to read many new words.
What readers & writers are doing at school...
Reading: Detectives are always working on doing their best with the skills they have. This week they will notice that longer more tricky words are more manegable when broken up into smaller parts. They will think about words and their endings like -s, -ing and -ed.
PHONICS: Readers and writers will study CVCe words with the vowel “I” that usually make a long sound, and that they can use this knowledge to help them read many new words.
What readers & writers could be doing at home...
Reading: Have detectives use their skills with hard words, remind them to break them up at the twin consonants. So that they can read each art easier.Use the Anchor Chart to think about the parts you can break words into.
PHONICS: “Times of the Day”. Use this book for you to find words with the vowel “I'' that usually make a long sound, Example: "Kite". Good Habits for Solving Hard Words.

Los escritores pueden escribir ‘introducciones’ y ‘conclusiones’ para ayudar a sus lectores.
What readers & writers are doing at school...
Los escritores de libros instructivos escribirán una página para introducir sus libros para darle al lector alguna información y algunos datos para que el resto del libro tenga más sentido para ellos,además, iniciarán el tramo # 4 del taller Regalar libros, pensarán a quien quieren regalar sus libros y escribirán una dedicatoria.
What readers & writers could be doing at home...
Lee el libro Hagamos salsa presta mucha atención como Lawrence el escritor del libro ha escrito la introducción (primer página) y la conclusión( última página) en el libro. ¿Qué vas a aprender leyendo este libro? conversa con tus padres.

Students will be using the number rack to solve addition and subtraction story problems. They will explain what strategies they use to solve them.

Students will develop Social Responsibility by examining the relationship between parents and their children.
What tigers could be doing at home...
Watch this video . They write down their observations about what they see and think about questions that will make them think scientifically about the nest and their purpose.
Social Emotional Learning Program
Learning Goal
Understand that strong emotions can make it hard to think clearly and take safe, kind, or useful actions.
Practice self-regulation, or getting calm, strategies in response to situations.
Identify personal and interpersonal outcomes when they use self-regulation strategies.
What friends and learners are doing at school...
The counselor reads a story about two characters who practice self-regulation strategies in the story. We also use an emotion thermometer to identify strong emotions and how this makes it difficult to think before acting or being unsafe or unkind to yourself and others.
What friends and learners could be practicing at home...
At home you can reinforce with the relaxation station, creating a space where you can place the poster and the feeling thermometer and practice daily.
