Kindergarten News

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Thank you to all families who were able to attend our Reading Celebration and celebrate your childs growth and for all the dads for joining us for Donuts with Dads. A friendly reminder that on Tuesday Nov 14 and Wednesday Nov 15th, we will be having our Student Led Conferences, please make sure to sign up for a time slot. NO SCHOOL on Wednesday November 15th.

If you have not send your field trip form please do so as soon as possible to your homeroom teacher.

This week in English Literacy we will be starting a new writing unit "Writing for Readers" and in Spanish they will be starting a new reading unit "Super Powers". In phonics, students learned that they need to listen and write sounds across words. They need to say the word slowly, listening for not just the first sound, but stretching and recording all the way to the end of the word. They also learned 3 more snap words: this, is, & here.

Kindergartners had a great week starting our first unit of Expeditions "Colors, Lines and Shapes"

We have the book Fair coming up next week.  If you would like to have your child purchase a book, send money on Monday Nov 13th.

Weekly Learning Goals & Tasks

English Literacy

Learning Goal

ELA: Students will be starting our writing unit "Writing for Readers".

Phonics: Students will read snap words no matter what, even when they look a bit different.

What readers & writers are doing at school...

ELA: Writers will use all their writing muscles to make true stories that are easy to read. Writers will experiment with the writing process. They will plan, draft and revise their true stories.

Phonics: Students will study and sort snap words. They will notice how capital and lowercase letters, size, and different font do not change how they read it. They will be using them to write a class letter inviting their stuffed animals to attend "Word School"

What readers & writers could be doing at home...

ELA: Writers can share some ideas of true stories at home with a family member, to later plan across pages at school and put it into paper.

Phonics: Students are encouraged at home to write a variety of sentences with snap words and picture cards. For example: Look at the slide, Look at the bike, etc. and/or This is a slide, This is a bike.

Spanish Literacy

Learning Goal

Los Estudiantes empezarán una nueva unidad de lectura llamada "Super Lectores"

What readers & writers are doing at school...

Los estudiantes se convertirán en super lectores activando sus super poderes y usando estrategias para leer sus libros.

What readers & writers could be doing at home...

En casa los estudiantes podrían poner en practica la lectura con uno de sus libros favoritos.

Mathematics

Learning Goal

Students will develop one to one correspondance, cardinality, counting collections of objects, and determining if one group of objects is greater than, less than or equal to another group.

What mathematicians are doing at school...

Mathematicians will continue to decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs. Students will also be representing addition with objects. They will count and compare collections of objects.

What readers & writers could be doing at home...

Mathematicians can count collections of objects in differnet ways (line, array, circle) to answer how many questions.

Science or Social Studies

Learning Goal

Students will learn about the importance of plants and what is causing them harm/pollution and what they can do to prevent pollution.

What tigers are doing at school...

Scientists will learn how living things interact with each other through the carbon cycle. They will realize the importance of plants, but the harm that is being caused to them by pollution and contamination. Scientists will understand how to prevent plants/environment from being harmed through recycling.

What tigers could be doing at home...

Scientists can then start recycling in their own homes in order to maintain a cleaner environment. But also talking with their family, friends, and neighbors on how they can also help to keep a clean environment.

Social Emotional Learning Program

Learning Goal

1. Learners and friends understand that situations have emotional consequences.

2. Learners and friends think about the cause of emotional reactions.

3. Learners and friends use situational clues to help identify emotions in themselves and others.

What friends and learners are doing at school...

Counselor explains how different situations allow us to have emotional reactions, for example we can feel different emotions both in class and on the playground. They also learned that each person can react differently to the same situation. Then, through collaborative work, children share with each other what emotional reactions they have in different scenarios.

What friends and learners could be practicing at home...

Having a family conversation, you could share questions and answers such as: How would you feel if…you were going on a train?

How would you feel if…you saw a dog alone in the park?

How would you feel if…the teacher painted the classroom walls bright pink?

How would you feel if… your teacher asked you to sing in front of class?

How would you feel if… a group of second graders asked you to play on their soccer team?

How would you feel if…Hungry Tiger served vegetable pizza for lunch?
