1st Grade News

Dear First Grade Families,

This month celebrates a festival that became popular as a celebration of love in the 14th century, around 600 years ago. Love comes in many forms, the most important, self-love and friendships. Take the time to talk about positive relationships. Sometimes children can find themselves in situations they don't want to, simply to please another. It's ok to not be friends with everyone, what is important is self-respect and respect towards others.

With much Love and Respect, 1st Grade Team

Weekly Learning Goals & Tasks

English Literacy

Learning Goal

Reading: This week we focus on helping readers develop the skill of envisioning as they read, starting with basic literal comprehension and moving to more inferential thinking. They will continue to be coached as they decode challenging words, but also help them to balance the challenges of decoding and maintaining meaning, shifting from one to the other as needed.

Phonics: Take time to see through words, you can use everything you know about letters and sounds to solve them.

What readers & writers are doing at school...

Reading: This week readers do the bigger, even more important work of reading to better understand the world. Each day you’ll give them a new strategy to help them understand their books, starting with the idea of keeping the story in their minds. channeling readers to not only keep track of the main story elements, but also to imagine the details. Developing Inferencing strategies.

Phonics: Readers and writers will remember how powerful they are by using everything they know about letters and sounds to solve them.

What readers & writers could be doing at home...

Friends and learners demonstrate respectful, assertive speaking.

What friends and learners are doing at school...

Friends and learners develop confidence in their communication skills when they practice speaking up for themselves and others. Speaking up can be difficult, and this can prevent students from having their ideas and needs heard and addressed. In the lesson, students will learn about and practice speaking up kindly and clearly for themselves and for others through scenarios they act out with a buddy.

What friends and learners could be practicing at home...

Stop reading when a character in a book has the option of speaking up and speaking kindly. Discuss what the character could do before you continue reading. Help students consider how the outcome might have changed if the character’s actions had been different.

Encourage kids to share their ideas, ask for help, or ask questions when in the home to continue to speak up and speak kindly.
