1st Grade News

Dear 1st grade families

This week, our focus is on helping your child sharpen their skills in various areas. They'll be refining their writing through better editing, fixing reading mistakes to improve comprehension, and celebrating their reading achievements in Spanish. In math, they'll be using drawings to grasp subtraction concepts more easily. Alongside this, they'll explore the distinction between needs and wants and make a deep reflection on the need for shelter and clothing. Also, our tigers will learn to appreciate the diversity among us, understanding the value of each individual's uniqueness. Through it all, we aim to foster a love for learning and a sense of self-worth in every child.

Thanks for your continued support,

Social Emotional Learning Program

Learning Goal

Friends and learners name the benefits of diversity.

Friends and learners foster openness toward learning about and from others.Friends and learners foster feeling a sense of being valued by something special about themselves.

What friends and learners are doing at school...

Sometimes students can find these differences interesting, but sometimes they may view these differences as very different from their own. Respecting and appreciating what makes each person unique can foster understanding, empathy, and positive attitudes toward others. In this lesson, students make collages that help them understand their diverse backgrounds and how that diversity makes us have valuable contributions to offer.

What friends and learners could be practicing at home...

When kids listen to or read stories, note how similar or different the characters in the stories are to them. Discuss ways to show respect to someone who does things differently.
