1st Grade News

Dear First Grade Families,

We are happy to see how our students have developed and grown a lot over the week by seeing and hearing patterns and using them to make rules in phonics. As powerful readers and writers, our students have learned to study names and use them to study any word, having as a goal review nineteen high frequency words. Keep in mind that phonics is a way of teaching children to read skilfully and it works better when children are given plenty of encouragement and learn to enjoy reading and books. Please remember 1st graders should be reading everyday for 20-25 minutes then write about what they read in their “Reading Response Notebooks”. Keep up the good work and keep our eyes on the goal ! Get ready to step into your child's shoes, join us for Open House on Sept 6th, sign up sheets 1A Tiger Experience, 1B Tiger Experience, 1 C Tiger Experience 1D Tiger Experience

Weekly Learning Goals & Tasks

English Literacy

Learning Goal

WRITING: Emulate what mentor authors do in our own writing.

PHONICS: Focus on studying how a word can be similar to other words, making emphasis on reviewing high frequency words.

What readers & writers are doing at school...

WRITING: Writers this week will be using familiar words to spell new and harder ones in their writing. We will studny mentor texts to emulate craft moves from other authors in our own stories.

PHONICS: Readers and writers will see how a word can be similar to other words and they will review high frequency words. When writing, they will turn a new word into a snap word because we are powerful writers and thinkers.

What readers & writers could be doing at home...

WRITING: Read a story together, talk with your child about what the author does to bring the story to life, then have them add that same craft move to their own personal story. Use the How to Ways to Bring Stories to Life Anchor chart to help.

PHONICS: Use what we practice about “Snap Words” to read the book “Where Do You See Letters?”. Make sure to identify five new words, now turn those words into snap words: start by reading the words, then go through each step on the chart.
