5th Grade News

Dear Families,

It has been wonderful to be back together with our students. They have already been discussing issues that matter to them and taking a stand. They have been multiplying whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Thank you for your continuous support!

Learning Goal

Analyze text arguments by asking questions about the claim, the reasons that support the claim and the evidence that backs up the reasons. Analyze both sides of an argument presented in a text.

What readers & writers are doing at school...

Readers will will recorgnize that a good argument is supported by reasons backed up by evidence, so when readers analyze an argument, they ask themselves questions about the claim being made, the reasons that support the claim, and the evidence backing up those reasons. They will also learn that when readers research an argument, they learn to grasp both sides of that argument by focusing initially on texts that lay out the argument clearly, and then reading for both sides.
