2nd Grade News
Dear 2nd grade parents,
Another great week has gone by, we are in the countdown process to end this school year 2023/2024. Thank you families for having shared wonderful time with your children last Thursday and creating memories. It was nice to see you sharing time with your kids. Remember next week Wednesday May 1st there is no School, due to our Labor Day!
Next Monday May 13th we will be BAS (Reading Test) our 2nd graders make sure they read daily at home for extra practice.
English Literacy
Learning Goal
Writers use everything they know to get their pieces even better.
What readers & writers are doing at school...
English Literacy: Writers will be using different student's samples for them to gather ideas and add more details to their writing pieces to get them better, they will use punctuation and illustrations to tell more about their stories. Phonics: Word collectors will take compound snap words apart and mix and match them to make more compound words, wich they can spell with acurracy in two snaps. Also, they will be creating a word they wish alrady existed and make posters about it. Finally, they will learn how adding a prefix un- changes the meaning of a base word. What readers & writers could be doing at home...
English Literacy: Writers will continue adding more details to their new books, working with more independence, checking punctuation and using illustrations to tell important details. They have to make sure that their stories include the same character, another setting, problem and a solution. Phonics: rewrite the following words using the prefix -un at the begging of each word. Ex: happy - unhappy. Fair, lock, like,usual, clear, afraid, wrap.

En esta unidad los estudiantes aprenden a ver el mundo con ojos de poetas a través de la lectura de la poesía. Los lectores estudian temas y caracteristicas importantes que los poetas utilizan en sus obras.

Los estudiantes se sumergen en el mundo poético, y descubren a través
de la lectura cómo los poetas ven y escuchan el mundo de manera diferente.
Los lectores de poesía se hacen preguntas para profundizar su comprensión, aclarar
conceptos y descubrir diferentes puntos de vista sobre un poema, desarrollando
su pensamiento crítico, Lectores practican fluidez lectora.
What readers & writers could be doing at home...
Lectores en casa:
-Leen poemas con ojos de poetas (poema favorito)
-Practican fluidez lectora tomando en cuenta: ritmo, pronunciación correcta de palabras, entonación, expresión y comprensión lectora (los lectores deben ser capaces de hacer conexiones, identificar palabras claves y recordar información importante del poema)
-Practicar la lectura del poema varias veces.
-En la lectura de poesía es importante que sea supervisada siempre por otra persona que pueda dar retroalimentación a los lectores y ayude a establecer metas para trabajar en su fluidez lectora.
-Lectores responden a preguntas después de la lectura: ¿Qué me hace pensar?, ¿Qué puedo ver?, ¿Qué me hace sentir? ¿Cómo lo puedo conectar con mi vida?

Learning Goal
Tigers determine the number of lines of symmetry in the blocks.
What mathematicians are doing at school...
Explain to our Mathematicians that a geometric figure is said to have line symmetry if it can be folded about a line to coincide
with itself. We will be creating composite shapes by composing two dimensional shapes.
What mathematicians could be doing at home...
Science or Social Studies

What tigers are doing at school...
Students will be discussing how to improve their current water bottles and lunchbooxes and design a new lunchbox and water bottle.
What tigers could be doing at home...
Look at an object you have at home, for example, a spoon, a chair,etc. and make a new design of it that show how to make it better.

Learning Goal
We will practice the four steps in problem solving and finding different ways to compromise so that everyone’s thoughts and feelings are considered.
What friends and learners are doing at school...
Name ways to compromise with others to solve problems.
Identify what might happen when I try a solution.
Use compromise to solve problems with others.
Take turns — wanting to do one idea first, and then another idea.
Trade — swapping one thing for another.
Share — making sure both people get to use something.
Try something new — find something new to do.

Tell about a time when you had to compromise. What did you give up? How do you feel about it now?

Reminders
Make sure you label your son/daughter's water bottles, have them wear the complete uniform and jackets. 2nd graders need to be responsible for their homework and turn it in. Make sure your children sleep at least 9 hours daily, do not let them use a tablet during the week, it spoils their sleeping time. Students should not bring gum or toys to school. Their snacks should not include too many sweets please.
