1st Grade News
Dear First Grade families,
We are ready to tackle new strategies with lots of learning. Our 1st graders will continue to focus on addition and subtraction story problems. They are also brainstormiing stories using graphic organizers. Reading is a huge part of our daily endeavor, please ensure that your child reads daily to continue to grow as readers and writers.
Weekly Learning Goals & Tasks
English Literacy
Learning Goal
Reading: Students will learn to notice Determination, Reflection, Curiosity and Compassion in characters while they read.
Phonics: Word builders will study sentences with OW words and figure out if the vowel team sounds in different ways.
What readers & writers are doing at school...
Reading: We will be reading 4 different fiction books where the character shows a speific Tiger Trait, Readers will think about what the character says, does and feels to show that he/she refelcts that trait.
Phonics: Word builders will see how the vowel team OW does different jobs in different words. They will study sentences with OW words and figure out if the vowel team sounds like /ou/ in flower or /o/ in know.
What readers & writers could be doing at home...
Reading : Watch these e-books together, talk about what the character, do, say , feel, or think, that show that they are Compassionate, Curious, Reflective, or Determined.
Phonics: Students will sing the song "What Different Sounds Can “OW” Make?" to make sure they listen to all the sounds they hear in the words. Sing along and dance along to the music as you learn how to read those special words.

En las aventuras de esta semana los lectores aprenderán sobre personajes interesantes,tienen que prestar atención a sus acciones, oírlos hablar, observar sus expresiones y entender sus sentimientos,así mismo,se darán cuenta de quién habla mientras están leyendo.

En casa lee La elefanta y el mono presta atención al diálogo entre los personajes, puedes volver a leer para presentar a los personajes con más detalles,además, conversa con tu compañero de lectura ¿Por qué los amigos se pusieron a reir cuando volvieron a cruzar el río?

What mathematicians are doing at school...
Students will model and solve subtraction story problems on their number racks. They can use the take -away strategy, finding the difference by counting up, and using th related addition fact.

Learning Goal
Scientists use what they learned about simple machines to design a catapult.
What tigers are doing at school...
Scientist will continue learning about simple machines: levers and catapults. They are going to begin the design process to build their own catapult.
What tigers could be doing at home...
Scientists observe the simple machines that helps them in everyday life.
Social Emotional Learning Program
Learning Goal
Learners and friends use problem-solving skills in a collaborative activity.
Learners and friends practice creating compromises as solutions to problems.
Learners and friends become more confident that they can solve problems with others.
What friends and learners are doing at school...
Learners and friends increase in their belief that they can solve problems the more they practice and successfully solve problems. In this lesson, they usedall four problem-solving steps (Pause, Talk, Think, Try), with a focus on compromising when thinking of potential solutions while role-playing scenarios to ensure a fair solution.
What friends and learners could be practicing at home...
Remind kids of problem-solving strategies and compromise when problems arise in the classroom and other areas where they have to accomplish shared goals.
