Dear Kindergarten Families,

What an amazing week it has been, although it was a short week it was full of lots of learning. In writing workshop, students began their unit about "writing for readers", they have been busy writing true stories about their lives. In spanish, they have been learning about super powers with their new reading unit. In math, students explored the concepts of 1 less and counting backwards. 

In phonics, they celebrated the end of our second unit "Word Scientists" by becoming teachers to their stuffed animals. Wishing all of you a restful and happy Thanksgiving Holiday.

English Literacy

Learning Goal

ELA: Students will write sentences to tell a story

Phonics: Students will be sharing lesson plans for word school 

What readers & writers are doing at school...

ELA: Writers will continue to plan stories across pages. They will write sentences that tell a story using their snap words and letter sounds. They will learn about the power of "Rereading".

Phonics: Students will make plans for teaching others the snap words they have learned. Students will review favorite snap word games and songs, so they are prepared to teach the snap words they know to their stuffed animals. 

What readers & writers could be doing at home...

ELA: Writers can practice telling a story in a sequence. They can use connecting words( First, next and last).

Phonics: Students can practice at home teaching others eveything they have learned about the snap words. They can play a word routine, sing a song, make a pattern, play I spy, share their writing or play guess my rule. 

Spanish Literacy

Learning Goal

Los lectores aprenderán que aveces cuando leen pueden equivocarse y las palabras sonarán raras o no tendrán sentido y deberán activar su poder de corregir y releer la oracion.

What readers & writers are doing at school...

Los lectores continuarán activando los poderes de lectura y aprendiendo poderes nuevos, será el momento de activar el poder de corregir y releer. 

What readers & writers could be doing at home...

En casa podrán practicar los tres poderes aprendidos en clase (poder de usar su dedito para apuntar, poder de deslizar sobre las palabras diciendo y uniendo las sílabas y poder de corregir y releer) para reforzar su poder de lectura.

Mathematics

Learning Goal

Mathematicians will be represent story problems with equations.

What mathematicians are doing at school...

Mathemmaticians will revisit five-frames and ten frames and will practice connecting the quantity with the equation. They will solve story problems and involving adding and subtracting. 

What readers & writers could be doing at home...

Students can try creating their own story problem and ask their family to solve. 

Science or Social Studies

Learning Goal

Students will learn the importance of living in harmony with others 

What tigers are doing at school...

Students will learn about their families, homes, Nicaragua and the importance of living together in harmony, respecting and embracing each others.

What tigers could be doing at home...

Students can share with their family that with live in Nicargua, but that we have our roots in other countries also, and embrace our uniqueness.

Social Emotional Learning Program

Learning Goal

Understand that strong emotions can make it hard to think clearly and take safe, kind, or useful actions.


Practice self-regulation, or getting calm, strategies in response to situations.


Identify personal and interpersonal outcomes when they use self-regulation strategies.

What friends and learners are doing at school...

The counselor reads a story about two characters who practice self-regulation strategies in the story. We also use an emotion thermometer to identify strong emotions and how this makes it difficult to think before acting or being unsafe or unkind to yourself and others.

What friends and learners could be practicing at home...

"At home you can reinforce with the relaxation station, creating a space where you can place the poster and the feeling thermometer and practice daily.
