The silence, which felt so awkward and uncomfortable seemed to drag on forever and Nathan racked his brain to think of something… anything he could say to break it.

“Well, Daddy?”

He looked down at his impatient five-year-old son who was looking up at him with this those big blue eyes of his that were so like his own.

“Uh…”

“Momma said you’d tell me how I got in her tummy.”

“Yeah, I know she did,” he told Jamie, glancing over at Haley who was standing in the doorway, her hand clamped over her mouth to try and disguise the fact that she was laughing her ass off.

As soon as he’d entered the house less than ten minutes ago, he’d had Jamie running up to him, informing him that his momma had just told him he had been inside her tummy at the time of their second wedding. He’d smiled at their boy’s excitement at having learned that fact but the smile had soon been wiped off his face when, in his next breath, Jamie had told him that she’d said he should ask him about how he got in there.

“So, how did I get in there?”

“Um, well, I think maybe we should talk about that when you’re a, uh, bit older, buddy.”

“But Momma said you’d tell me!” he said, stomping one of his feet on the floor.

“Jamie…” he warned.

“Sorry,” he mumbled before bringing out the big guns and pouting. “I just really wanna know how I got in there.”

Nathan bit his lip to stop himself from laughing which, seeing his wife’s current state, was damn near impossible. An idea suddenly popped into his head and he silently prayed that it would work. “Hey, you know what? How about we have some ice cream and—”

“And then you’ll tell me how I got in Momma’s tummy?”

“Uh… sure,” he replied, his voice somewhat shaky. “Why don’t you go into the kitchen and we’ll be there in a minute, okay?”

“Okay,” Jamie agreed, running off into the kitchen to grab his favourite Scrappy Doo bowl.

Walking over to Haley, he hooked his arm around her waist and pulled her towards him. “You are so going to pay for doing that to me, Hales.”

Cocking an eyebrow, her lips curved upwards as she asked, “Do you promise?”

Instead of answering her, he leaned into her and pressed his lips against hers. “Yeah,” he drawled a few moments later when the kiss had ended.

“Daddy!” A voice called from the kitchen and Nathan groaned.

“You’ve gotta help me out here, babe. I have no clue what to tell him and I’ll probably screw up and say something he’s not ready to hear and it’ll freak him out and—”

Pushing herself up onto her tiptoes, Haley covered his lips with her own and silenced his rambling. “You’ll do great, Nathan, but do you really think I’d leave it all up to you to tell him?”

“You mean you’ll do it?” he asked while crossing his fingers behind his back.

“Oh, no,” she told him. “We’ll do it together. Fair’s fair, right?”

He nodded his head. “Right.”

“I thought we’d have a few more years before we had to tell him any of this stuff but then again, he is a Scott so he was bound to be an early starter,” she said, giggling.

“Very funny,” he retorted, although he was laughing along with her.

Slipping her hand into his, they made their way into their kitchen, ready to face Jamie and answer his question. Before they entered, Nathan turned to her and quietly suggested, “We could always shift this onto Luke’s shoulders… I mean, he is his uncle and godfather. That’s got to count for something, right?”

Laughing at his suggestion, Haley was just about to say no but as they entered the room and saw Jamie sitting at the counter, an eager, expectant expression etched upon his beautiful face, she suddenly started seeing the merits of what he’d put forward.

“Not such a bad idea, huh?” he whispered playfully in her ear.

Swatting him on the shoulder, she shook her head but found herself saying, “Jamie, honey, how would you like to go and visit your Uncle Luke?”
