Author's Notes: This is part of my ‘Crash Into You series’ and is an alternative scene to what happens in the final story. You’ll know what I mean once you’ve read it.

For the record, this was inspired by a scene I watched several years ago featuring my favourite pairing from the Australian soap opera ‘Neighbours’.

This has been written for theechochorus, a multi-fandom drabble community.

“Haley? Where are you?” Nathan called out as he entered the auto shop his girlfriend worked at. It was just after noon and, by the looks of things, the other mechanics had disappeared for lunch. “Hales?”

“I’m busy.”

He followed the sound of her muffled voice and smiled when he saw her jean-clad legs sticking out from underneath a car she was working on. Without saying another word, he walked over to where she was and kneeled down in front of her. Grabbing her legs, he wheeled her out so he could see her face and laughed at the pout gracing her lips.

“Hey!” Haley said, pushing herself up into a sitting position and rubbing her cheek with the back of her hand.

Nathan grinned at the grease that stained her face. His girl was a real little grease monkey. “You’ve got a little something on you,” he said, running his thumb along her cheekbone.

“What are you doing here?”

“I had a meeting downtown and I thought I’d stop by and say hello. That’s okay, isn’t it?” he teased.

“You know it is,” she replied with a smile. When he leaned forward, she did the same and their lips met in the middle. The kiss was soft and tender with an underlying passion.

He cupped her face between his palms, tilting her head to the side and slanting his mouth over hers to deepen the kiss.

“I-I’ve got to get back to work,” Haley told him breathlessly several minutes later when the kiss had ended due to a lack of oxygen. “The owner’s coming to pick his car up at four and—”

Nathan cut her off by kissing her again, his tongue sliding into her mouth to tangle playfully with hers. Knowing he also needed to get back to work, he reluctantly broke the kiss and nuzzled his nose against hers. “Okay. Before I go though, I just need you to say yes to something.”

“Uh huh… I’ve heard that one before. Say yes to what?”

He shook his head. “Just say yes.”

“Nathan, c’mon. Tell me what I’m saying yes to.”

“Nope,” he said, smirking at her.

“Okay, fine. Yes.”

Reaching into his pocket, he removed a small blue box and opened it so she could see its contents.

Haley’s breath caught in her throat as she looked at the diamond and sapphire ring that sat on a bed of white satin and her eyes filled with tears as she looked up at him and took in the fact he was now on one knee.

“I love you so much… I have done from pretty much the first moment we met and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. So, Haley James, will you marry me?”

The smile she rewarded him with stretched from ear to ear as she nodded her head. “Yes, Nathan… Yes, I’ll marry you.” Her eyes left his as she looked down at him sliding the white gold band onto her ring finger and, if possible, her smile grew even wider.
