Nathan inwardly groaned as for the third night that week he felt a tugging on his side of the bed. Slowly opening his eyes, he saw his son standing there, a big smile on his face.

“I thought of another one, Daddy,” he whispered loudly which had his father cringing.

“Shh, you don’t want to make your mom up… You know how cranky she gets,” he teased, putting a finger to his lips.

The little boy giggled. “Uh huh,” he said, lowering his voice.

Nathan smiled and reaching out his hand, he ruffled his sandy blonde hair. “It’s late, buddy, and you’ve got school tomorrow so let’s get you back to bed.”

“But I thought of another name for Nugget and you have to add it to the list so I don’t forget.”

“I think the list is downstairs but, hey, if you tell me the name I promise to add it to the list in the morning, okay?”

“You promise you won’t forget?”

“I promise. Now what’s the name you’ve thought of?”

“Lainey,” Jamie replied proudly.

“Hmm, that’s pretty nice,” Nathan told him. “How’d you come up with that?”

“I don’t know,” he said, shrugging his shoulders.

“Well, you did good, buddy, and I’m sure your mom will like it. We’ll tell her about it tomorrow when she wakes up.”

“Okay.”

“You want me to take you back to your room and tuck you in?”

“Um…”

Nathan knew what was coming and he knew he was, again, going to be too soft for his own good.

“Can I stay in here tonight with your and Momma? I wanna tell her the new name as soon as she wakes up.”

“You can tell me now, baby,” Haley said in a heavily sleep-laden voice as she maneuvered herself onto her side and looked at her son over her husband’s shoulder, giving him a soft smile.

“It’s Lainey,” he told her as he climbed up onto the bed and clambered over his father so he could see her better.

“Hmm, Lainey… That’s pretty. We’ll definitely have to add that to the list tomorrow.”

“You won’t forget?”

Haley shook her head. “Nope, of course not. Now your dad on the other hand… he’d have forgotten for sure,” she mock-whispered.

“Hey, I heard that!” Nathan exclaimed.

Jamie laughed at his parents. They were so goofy! “Can I still sleep here tonight?” he asked a moment later.

Nathan looked at her and smirked, making it clear that it was her decision to make.

“Okay, but you have to be really quiet and go straight to sleep.”

“I will,” he promised and as soon as Haley had scooted over, he scrambled in between his parents and got under the covers. “Momma? Is Nugget awake?”

“No, baby, she’s not and that’s the way we want it to stay otherwise I won’t get any sleep,” she teased before leaning forward and pressing a kiss to the top of his head.

Turning over onto his side, Nathan watched as Jamie yawned and he and Haley shared a smile. “G’night, buddy.”

“Night, Daddy… Night, Momma.”

“Goodnight, baby.” She couldn’t resist nuzzling her nose against his cheek and breathing in his familiar scent. “I love you.”

“Love you, too…” he mumbled as he slowly began to drift off to sleep.

“Lainey, huh?” Haley whispered several minutes later once she’d heard her son’s breathing even out.

“Yeah… It’s kinda cute. Funny how he’s come up with another name that sounds similar to his own.”

Chuckling quietly, she nodded. “I know. It seems he’s deliberately thinking of names that end in ‘ie’ or ‘ey’.”

“You think he’s trying to tell us something?” he quipped.

“Yeah, I’d say so. He’s definitely come up with some good ones though and I’m just grateful they haven’t been as strange as the ones he thought up when choosing names for Chester.”

“Tell me about it, although the way some celebrities are naming their kids these days those choices weren’t all that out there.”

Haley put a hand across her mouth to muffle her laughter. “We’re going to wake him up if we’re not careful.”

Smirking at her, Nathan leaned forward and covering her mouth with his, he kissed her slowly, loving the look of contentment she wore when he drew back from her. His hand rubbed soothing circles over her large bump as he watched her eyes slowly flutter open.

Placing her hand over his, she gave it a gentle squeeze. “It’s a good thing Jamie’s sleeping in here with us ‘cause otherwise we’d both be filthy tired tomorrow.”

Raising an eyebrow, his smirk deepened. The lusty tone in her voice told him just what she was thinking but he couldn’t resist having a little fun with her. “Oh really? Maybe I should carry him back to his own bed and you can show me exactly what you mean.”

Fisting the T-shirt he wore, she pulled him for another kiss. “I’ll show you exactly what I mean tomorrow night when he’s sleeping over at Luke’s.”

They shared another lingering kiss and upon hearing Jamie stir, they reluctantly broke the kiss and looked down at him; both of them breathing a sigh of relief to see that he was still fast asleep.

“C’mon, let’s try and get some sleep before he wakes us up again with another name to add to the list,” Nathan suggested, dropping one last kiss onto her plump lips.

“Okay. Night, honey,” she said as she shifted down under the covers, being careful not to wake up their son.

“G’night, Hales,” he said as he did the same thing.

As their eyes grew heavy and they each drifted off to sleep, they both wondered how many more names Jamie would be coming up with and how many more interrupted nights they could look forward to before their daughter arrived.
