Author’s Notes: This has been written in response to moon_destiny's prompt which was posted at comment_fic : Danny/Lindsay + Lucy – fatherhood was hard, but he wouldn't trade it for anything.

Danny had worked enough double shifts to know what exhaustion felt like. Hell, there was that one time he’d been so bone tired that he’d hallucinated and seen Lindsay in the lab when she was actually hundreds of miles away in Montana. When he’d had the opportunity to finally get some sleep, he’d forfeited it and ended up staying awake for even longer which had been well worth it.

The same was true now.

Rubbing a hand over his face, he released a quiet sigh as he waited for the bottle of milk to warm up, gently bouncing the precious bundle situated on his hip as he did so. “Shh, it’s okay, sweetheart,” he soothed when she let out a loud, hungry cry. Her tiny fist tightly grasped his T-shirt as she wailed again.

Lucy’s whimpering had woken him up and not wanting his wife’s sleep to be disturbed as well, he forced himself to get up and see to her before the whimpers turned into full out screaming. Their baby girl sure had a set of lungs on her.

So, here he was at 3:45am pacing their kitchen while he waited for his six-month-old daughter’s next feed to be ready. At least he and Lindsay had today off so they could hopefully catch up on some much needed sleep.

He knew fatherhood wasn’t going to be a walk in the park and, if he was being completely honest with himself, it was harder than he’d envisioned. There had been more than a few sleepless nights where Lucy had bawled so hard that her little face had turned bright red and nothing they’d tried – and they’d tried everything – had calmed her down. Going into work just a few short hours later when neither of them had had little or no sleep whatsoever was definitely no fun.

However, the moment his chubby cheeked baby girl smiled up at him and giggled, her delicate little fingers gripping his thumb, every sleepless night was quickly forgotten.

Removing the bottle from the warmer, Danny walked the short distance to the living room and took a seat on the couch; settling his daughter on his lap and leaning her back into the crook of his arm before he tested the milk on his skin. Satisfied that it was the right temperature, he placed the teat between her lips and chuckled at how fast she immediately began sucking. “You’ve got some appetite on ya, Luce.”

“Everything okay?”

Danny glanced up at hearing Lindsay’s voice and he smiled at her sleep-rumpled state. “Yeah,” he replied. “Did she wake you?”

“No,” she said, shaking her head before confessing, “I woke up when I felt your side of the bed was empty.”

He smirked at that. “Is that so?”

Lindsay blushed as she came closer and took a seat beside him on the couch. Cuddling into his side, she ran a finger along the back of Lucy’s hand which was resting on top of the plastic bottle. The little girl’s eyes were already closed and Lindsay knew she’d be fast asleep in no time.

Turning his head towards his wife, Danny pressed a soft kiss into her hair, breathing in the familiar, fruity scent of her shampoo. Sitting there in the early hours of the morning with his two girls, he’d never felt happier or more at peace and he wouldn’t trade in that feeling for anything in the world.
