“Happy Mother’s Day!”

Haley’s eyes fluttered open at hearing her son’s voice and propping herself up against her pillows, she watched as the five-year-old climbed up onto her bed. “Aww, thank you, baby.” Leaning forward, she helped him up and pulled him onto her lap, peppering his cheeks with butterfly kisses. “Where’s Daddy?”

“He’s makin’ breakfast,” Jamie replied, his voice still sounding sleepy which wasn’t surprising given the early hour.

“How come you’re not helping him this morning?” Most weekends when Nathan was at home, their boy liked to help his father prepare breakfast, especially when it involved his favourite chocolate chip pancakes. More often than not, most of the chocolate chips ended up disappearing into his mouth rather than into the pancake batter.

“I wanted to come see you.”

“Well, I’m glad you did,” she told him, pressing a kiss onto the top of his head while her fingers tickled his tummy, making the little boy giggle. Hearing Nathan’s footsteps, she looked across at the doorway and smiled as he walked through it carrying a large tray.

“I hope you’re hungry,” Nathan said as he approached, his eyes fixed on his wife’s.

Haley felt her skin grow warm at his words which, given their activities last night, definitely held a double meaning. “Starving,” she whispered and she didn’t fail to notice the slight darkening of his baby blues at her breathy tone. God, he looked so good in the morning; his hair all mussed, his face unshaven and his whole demeanor just generally more relaxed.

“I’m starving, too!” Jamie exclaimed.

“Like that’s news,” Nathan teased. Setting the tray down onto the bed, he laughed as Jamie grabbed his plate and a fork and began tucking into his favourite pancakes. “Woah, slow down, buddy.”

Haley shook her head as she took the plate Nathan passed her followed by a bottle of maple syrup and she poured a generous amount onto her own blueberry pancakes. “Thanks for making my favourite, baby.”

“You’re welcome,” he said, wondering how well she’d be rewarding him for it later. “So, what did you think of Jamie’s card?”

“Card?”

“Oops!” The little boy mumbled. “I forgot it in my room.”

“Aww, that’s okay, honey. You can give it to me after we’ve finished eating.”

Jamie shook his head. “No, I want to get it now.” Putting his plate back onto the tray, he jumped down from the bed and raced out of the door and into his own room.

Nathan didn’t waste the opportunity. Getting up from his seat on the end of the bed, he walked round to her side and lowered his head, kissing her softly and tasting the sweetness of the syrup on her lips.

“Mmm,” she murmured, the fingers of her free hand bunching the T-shirt he wore as she kept him in place. “Morning.”

“Morning,” he repeated before stealing another kiss. He cradled her cheek in his palm as he slanted his head and kissed her deeper. Hearing their son’s fast approaching footsteps, he reluctantly drew back from her and sat down again, smirking at the rosy tint that coloured her face.

“Here, Momma!” Jamie said, holding out his hand-drawn card for her to take once he’d gotten himself comfortable on the bed.

Haley’s smile stretched from ear to ear as she took in the family scene her baby boy had drawn on the front of her card, the words “Happy Mother’s Day” written across the top in big red letters. “It’s beautiful, baby. Thank you.” Brushing her hand over his sandy-blonde hair, she leaned down and kissed his head.

“Read the inside,” Jamie directed and he watched as she opened it.

Her heart melted as she read the words her son had written declaring her to be the best mom in the world. “C’mere, you,” she said and a moment later he’d clambered into her lap and had his arms wrapped around her. “Thank you for the card, baby.”

“You’re welcome, Momma.” He giggled when she blew a raspberry against his neck and he wriggled away from her. “Can we go and see a movie later?”

“Sure, that sounds like fun,” she told him.

“And can I sleep over at Andre’s tonight? We wanna play with the walkie talkies again.”

Haley didn’t need to look at Nathan to know what his answer would be. Biting back her smile, she said, “If it’s okay with Andre’s mom, then I don’t see why not. What do you think, honey?” It took everything in her not to laugh when she saw the hopeful expression on her husband’s face.

“Uh, yeah… sure.”

“Okay. How ‘bout we finish eating and get ready? If a certain little someone’s very good, we might even grab some pizza after the movie.”

“Yay!”

A short while later when they’d all finished eating, Nathan and Haley were downstairs doing the dishes.

“So, you didn’t sound all that eager for Jamie to sleep over at Andre’s tonight?” she teased.

“Didn’t I?” Dropping the dish he’d been washing back into the soapy water, he wiped his hands on a dishtowel before turning to face his gorgeous wife. Snaking an arm around her waist, he pulled her flush against him as her hands slid up his chest. “Maybe I should show you just how eager I am.”

Pushing herself up onto her tiptoes, she traced the tip of her tongue around his lips, retreating before he had a chance to capture her mouth. “Hmm, maybe you should,” she whispered, a tiny squeal of surprise escaping her throat when he suddenly lifted her off of the ground and kissed her hard.

Mother’s Day had gotten off to a pretty terrific start and Haley had a feeling the rest of it was going to be even better.
