Author’s Notes: This story is written for ‘The Lighting up the Night Challenge’ at dareyouto_write.

The first part of the story uses a drabble I recently wrote just in case anyone thinks it sounds familiar. Thanks to the always wonderful Brynne for the speedy beta and for all of her help with this. *hugs*

Tiny. That was the only word that sprang to mind as Nathan intently watched his newborn daughter being cradled in his wife’s arms. He softly stroked his thumb over the sole of one of her little feet, marveling at her perfect little toes and the softness of her skin.

“She’s so small,” he whispered, breaking the comfortable silence.

“She sure is,” Haley agreed, smiling at the wonderment upon his face. “We’ll have to enjoy it while it lasts since she might grow to be as tall as her daddy.”

He laughed. “Well, let’s hope her feet are as small and pretty as her mommy’s instead of taking after mine.”

Sitting on the edge of Haley’s hospital bed, Nathan couldn’t take his eyes off the pair of them and, in that moment, he felt his heart swell with all the love he felt for the both of them. Any doubts and insecurities that had plagued him about becoming a father disappeared the instant he held his daughter for the first time just a couple of hours ago, her perfect little fingers tightly gripping his thumb.

“She looks just like you,” Haley whispered, glancing across to her husband. “She’s got your eyes and your chin, not to mention your hair.” As she spoke, her fingers lightly brushed over the shock of dark hair covering the baby’s head.

Returning her smile, he nodded. “She’s got your nose and lips though and, by the looks of it, she’s gonna have your curls. Kinda makes her the perfect blend of us.”

Leaning forward, she met him halfway and they shared a soft, tender kiss. “How about we name her? I mean, we can’t keep calling her ‘she’.”

Nathan chuckled. “We could if we named her Sheila or Sheba or—”

“Right, that wasn’t on either of our lists and I don’t think it’s going to be now, do you?”

He shook his head while trying to muffle his laughter so he didn’t wake up his sleeping daughter. “I’m just teasing. Are we sticking to what we decided on or do you think it doesn’t suit her now she’s here?”

They both peered down at the baby, watching her button nose scrunch up as she nuzzled her cheek against her mother’s breast where she was being held.

“I still think it fits, what do you think, Nathan?”

Kissing her mouth again, he then lowered his head and dropped a light kiss onto the baby’s forehead before meeting Haley’s gaze again. “I do, too. No doubt she’ll hate it when she’s older.”

“Oh, no doubt at all,” she agreed, the corners of her mouth curving upwards into a smile.

Holding out his arms, he carefully took his daughter from his wife and held her close to his chest. Looking down at her, he smiled when her eyes fluttered open and she regarded him curiously, the cerulean blue of them a mirror image of his own. “Well Amy Louise Scott, how do you like your name?”

The baby gurgled in response which caused her proud parents to laugh.

“Hmm, you think that was a yes?” Nathan asked a moment later. “It sounded like a yes to me.”

“And to me.” Watching her husband and daughter, Haley couldn’t stop smiling. If someone had told her a few years ago that not only would she end up married to her best friend but that they’d have a beautiful baby daughter together, she would’ve called them crazy. Only in her wildest dreams had she thought that was remotely possible but here they were, married with a beautiful little baby, both of whom she loved to bits.

Their getting together almost six years ago had been pretty unexpected, although not as unexpected for their families it would seem. Whilst both of them had kept their feelings for each other to themselves, their respective families had sensed something more than friendship between the pair and apparently several members had had wagers on how long it would take before they gave in and hooked up.

“What’cha thinking about, Hales?” Nathan asked when he glanced up and saw the faraway look in her eyes.

“I was just thinking about when we first got together. How we both wanted to be with each other but were too scared to do anything about it.”

“Yeah, thank heavens for alcohol then, huh?” he teased. “All that wine and vodka we drank that night definitely gave us the push we needed.”

Joining in with his laughter, she nodded her head slowly. “At least this little one wasn’t the result of too much alcohol,” she said, running her forefinger over her daughter’s chubby little cheek.

“True, although if we hadn’t snuck upstairs away from the party when we did it might’ve been a different story. I think Tim wanted to get everyone as drunk as he was.”

Haley released a burst of laughter when she suddenly remembered something. “God, your face when those fireworks suddenly went off…”

Nathan bit his bottom lip to stop himself from smirking. “Hey! I wasn’t expecting them to go off at that exact moment.”

Flashback

Nine months ago…

“Nathan, what are you doing?” Haley asked her husband as she felt him come up behind her, pressing his body against hers. She couldn’t help the shiver that ran through her when his deep, husky voice whispered into her ear.

“Let’s go make out?”

“What?”

“C’mon, Hales, no one will miss us. Let’s go upstairs to my old room and—”

“Someone’s bound to notice we’re gone. Your mom and Karen were wanting to talk to me about something so it’ll probably be them that’ll come looking for us.”

“So?”

“What do you mean ‘so’?” she asked while turning around to face him. “You know this Fourth of July party is just as much for us as it is for everyone else since we don’t live close by so sneaking off to do what we pretty much do every day and night seems a bit… well, rude.”

Nathan laughed. “It’s kind of expected of us,” he reminded her. “They’d think it was weird if we didn’t suddenly disappear during a party.”

Haley bit her lip to keep from laughing. “That may be true but—”

“But nothing, Hales. C’mon, we were interrupted this morning ‘cause my Mom wanted to take you shopping and who knows how long this party will go on for. My Dad and Keith are still outside grilling food so I don’t think the fireworks will be starting for a while. I promise we’ll be back in time to join everyone for the display,” he told her.

“So you’re saying you want us to go and create some fireworks of our own right now, huh?”

A smirk gracing his face, Nathan leaned forward and captured her lips in a fiery kiss which sent his temperature soaring. “Yep. How about it, Hales? You feel like creating our own private little fireworks display?”

Instead of answering him verbally, Haley took his hand in hers and glancing around the living room, she saw that they had a clear run to the stairs leading upstairs to Nathan’s old bedroom which was where they were staying during their visit to Tree Hill.

“I’ll take that as a yes then,” he teased as she pulled him along and before he knew it, they were upstairs and inside his room, the door securely locked as they made quick work of stripping each other’s clothes off.

“When do you think this will wear off?” she asked breathlessly once she’d broken the kiss they had just been sharing.

“What do you mean?” Picking her up, he carried her over to his bed and gently laid her down before crawling on top of her and sealing his mouth over hers once more. His lips trailed a path down her jaw to her neck where he began sucking furiously, determined to leave his mark on her.

“I-I mean… Uh… When will this desperate need to make out or make love wear off? I figured things might cool down once we were married but hell, we’ve been married for three years now and, if it’s possible, I want you even more now than I did when we first got together.”

Smiling against her skin, Nathan pushed himself up onto his forearms and looked down into her rich, chocolate brown eyes. “I know what you mean and hopefully it’ll never wear off. The way I feel about you, I can’t imagine that ever happening, Hales.”

Wrapping her arms around his neck, Haley pulled him down on top of her, loving the feel of his weight pushing her down into the soft mattress beneath her. Nuzzling her nose against his, she smiled shyly. “Me either and I hope it never wears off, too.” Kissing his mouth hotly, she withdrew a moment later and added, “I love you so much, Nathan.”

“I love you too, baby. You’re the best thing in my life and I can’t get enough of you,” he whispered, his breath coming in harsh pants against her skin. “I just wish I’d told you how I felt sooner so that we—”

Bringing her hand up, she placed her forefinger against his lips. “Shhh. Maybe we weren’t meant to be together then… Maybe we weren’t ready for it at that point in our lives. The main thing is that we’re together now… Nothing else matters.”

Nathan cupped her cheek, drawing her to him for another kiss which while being soft and tender, was increasing in passion with each passing second. “You’re right,” he murmured once the kiss had broken and his breathing had returned to some semblance of normal. “Nothing else matters.”

Their kisses became more and more heated as their bodies joined and came together. Just at the point of culmination, Haley’s body arched up off the bed and turning her head slightly to one side, she looked out of the window at the night sky and saw colourful lights exploding. She blinked a couple of times to try to ascertain if she was really seeing them or if the sensory overload she was experiencing at Nathan’s extremely talented hands was to blame.

The sudden bangs and explosions going off outside had Nathan jerking his head up from where his mouth had been sucking on her collarbone while his hand had been busy massaging her breast. The wild yet confused look in his eyes set her off and she couldn’t help giggling at the expression he wore.

“What the hell!?”

Averting her gaze to the window, she gestured for him to look too which he did and together they saw bright, colourful lights decorating the night sky. “It’s just the fireworks going off,” she told him as her hand stroked the back of his neck.

Nathan looked into her smiling face and couldn’t help but smile as well. “So I see. I’ve just got one question for you; how long have we been up here?”

End Flashback

Cupping his cheek in her palm, she drew him towards her and sucked his bottom lip into her mouth, grazing it with her teeth before pulling back slightly. “And there was me thinking you were so good you were making me see those flashes of light outside the window,” she said before breaking up into a fit of giggles.

“You think you’re so funny, don’t you?”

“Uh huh, yes I do.” Glancing down at Amy Louise, she smiled at her daughter whose eyes fluttered open briefly before closing again. “You hear that, baby girl? Daddy thinks mommy’s funny and he’s not wrong. Especially when we’re laughing at him.”

“That’s right, gang up on me. The next one had better be a boy,” he mock-huffed, a smile tugging at his lips.

“Aww, honey, you feeling outnumbered already?”

“Maybe,” he teased, stroking her cheek softly before repeating the action on his daughter. “Which is why I think we need to get started on baby number two as soon as possible.”

“Oh, really? And what if baby number two is another girl, huh?”

“I won’t care, Hales. Boys or girls are fine with me.”

“Good answer,” she mumbled against his lips before yawning.

“Why don’t you take a nap while we wait for you both to be discharged?” Nathan suggested as he took in her tired appearance.

“Hmm, sounds good.” Leaning back against her pillows, Haley watched as he got up off the bed and moved to sit in a nearby chair, carefully holding their daughter as he did so. As she continued looking at them, she felt her eyes grow heavy and she soon fell asleep, a soft smile etched upon her face.

Cradling the baby, he rocked her gently in his arms, his eyes flitting between his two sleeping girls. He couldn’t wait for them to visit Tree Hill where they could introduce the new addition to the Scott family to everyone. Maybe his parents could hold a small party as a celebration and, who knows, maybe they could even have fireworks again.
