“Momma?”

“Yes, baby?” Haley looked over at Jamie who was sitting at the kitchen counter drawing a picture while she baked some cookies.

“I know what I want for my birthday.”

She smiled as she spooned the cookie mixture onto a baking sheet. “Oh yeah, and what might that be?”

“A baby brother!”

Haley’s breath caught in her throat and she coughed. She definitely hadn’t been expecting him to say that. “Um...well, I think we’ve left it a little late for this birthday but, uh—”

“Yeah,” he interrupted dejectedly, “Daddy said that, too but he said I could have one for my next birthday.”

“Oh, did he?” She bit back the smile she could feel tugging at her lips when she saw the hopeful expression on her baby boy’s face.

“Uh huh. He said he was gonna talk to you and then he mumbled something but I couldn’t understand it,” he told her, putting down the crayon he was holding and picking up another colour.

“I’ll bet,” she murmured under her own breath.

“Yeah, like that,” Jamie pointed out. “So can I have a baby brother for my next birthday?”

“Well, we can’t be sure we’ll have a boy… It could be that you’ll have a baby sister.”

Scrunching up his face, he shook his head. “I don’t want a sister. Girls are bossy like Lily… she tried to make me call her Aunt Lily. I don’t hafta call her that, do I, Momma?”

Haley couldn’t help but laugh this time and shaking her head, she said, “No, honey, you don’t have to call her that.”

“What’s so funny?” Nathan asked as he entered the kitchen, making his way over to the fridge to grab a bottle of water.

“Oh, nothing. Just our son telling me he wants a baby brother for his birthday. Apparently, you told him you’d “talk” to me,” she replied, using her fingers to make air quotes.

“Uh, yeah…” He rubbed the back of his neck nervously as tried to decipher the look on her face which he understood much more clearly when she spoke again.

“We’ll talk about it tonight,” she told him quietly, her hand reaching out to cup his cheek in her palm.

Lowering his head, he pressed his lips against hers and kissed her softly.

“Yuck! Kissin’!” A voice suddenly exclaimed.

“Hey, buddy, if you want a baby brother you—”

“Nathan!” she practically shouted, cutting him off before he could say too much.

He laughed at the rosy blush tinting her skin and leaning into her, he nuzzled his nose against hers. “Sorry,” he mumbled before kissing her once more.

“Momma, Daddy?”

“Yeah, buddy?”

“If I’m not having a baby brother for my birthday this year, can I have a puppy instead?” Jamie asked, his voice hopeful and a big smile stretching across his face. When they suddenly started laughing and showed no sign of answering his question any time soon, he shook his head and went back to his colouring. Momma and Daddy were so silly!
