Author’s Notes: This story was written for the Bad Romance Novel Smut-a-thon Challenge at romancingvm. The line I was given to use was, “I was just nowhere near your neighbourhood.”

The title of the story is taken from a line from the song ‘From Myself Baby’ by Matt Willis.

Veronica’s heart was pounding wildly in her chest and she took several deep breaths in an attempt to try and calm herself down. As she did so, her eyes kept glancing at the modest house whose driveway she was parked in front of. While she had had his address for a while now, this was the first time that she was seeing his house and it had come as a bit of a surprise. It was definitely a far cry from the home he had grown up in as a child and as that thought entered her head, she realised that him living in a house like this wasn’t that much of a surprise after all, particularly knowing how painful so much of his youth had been.

With one final deep breath, Veronica exited her car, smoothing down her brown suede skirt, before making the short walk to the front door, pausing for a long moment before finally ringing the bell. Part of her wished that he was out while the other part, the part that desperately wanted to see him, hoped he was in.

The door suddenly opened and her eyes were level with a bare chest. Not only that, but a bare chest that was covered in water droplets that made her mouth feel so dry she wanted to lean forward and lick them up to quench her thirst.

“Veronica?”

“Uh…hi,” she squeaked out, coughing to clear her throat. “Hi.”

“What are you doing here?” Logan asked, looking the petite blonde up and down, examining her for any sign of distress or injury since that was so often the case when it came to her.

Veronica’s eyes met his own and she could see the obvious curiosity they held at her sudden appearance on his doorstep. “I needed to see you.”

“Is everything okay?” Taking a step back, he opened the front door wider so that she could enter his home. He watched her hesitate for a split second before she crossed the threshold and stood awkwardly in his foyer.

“Depends on what you mean by okay,” Veronica muttered under her breath.

“Sorry, what was that?”

“Nothing,” she quickly stated. “Everything’s fine… Dad’s doing great and I know you’re in touch with Wallace so--”

“Why are you here, Veronica?” A rambling Veronica Mars was always a sign of trouble and he knew if he let her, she would go around in circles before eventually saying what she had come all this way to talk to him about.

“I was just in your neighbourhood?” she offered weakly before releasing a heavy sigh and saying, “Okay, fine. I was just nowhere near your neighbourhood.”

Logan impatiently waited for her to continue and when she didn’t, he prompted, “So?” He watched her take a long, deep breath before she finally spoke again.

“I’m pregnant.” Veronica watched her ex-boyfriend’s mouth drop open and his eyes widen with shock at her news and she couldn’t help feeling that it had been a big mistake coming here today and telling him.

“You’re what?”

“Pregnant. You know, knocked up, bun in the oven, with chi--”

“I got it. I don’t…I mean, how?”

“How?” she repeated, one eyebrow raising inquisitively. “I’d have thought you of all people would know the answer to that question.”

“Very funny,” he threw back. “The last time we were together was four months ago and we were careful. We used protection.”

Veronica nodded. “I know but you know they’re not always a hundred percent effective. Didn’t you ever see that episode of Friends?” she quipped.

He looked at her incredulously. “I’m glad to see you’re taking this so well.”

Shaking her head, she said, “No, actually I’m not. But if I don’t try and find the humour in the situation all I’ll do is stay in bed and cry and…”

“It’s that horrific finding yourself pregnant by me, huh?”

“What? No, of course not. It’s just…it’s not like this was something either of us wanted. Right?” She watched him closely and didn’t miss the way his shoulders slumped.

“Speak for yourself.”

“Logan, I--”

“You know what, never mind. It’s in the past and this is the present, two very different things.” Logan suddenly seemed to realise he was still standing in front of her in just a towel and if this situation wasn’t so damn…whatever the hell it was, he would have laughed. “Let me go and get dressed. There’s coffee in the kitchen which is just through there,” he said gesturing to the room at the end of the hallway. “Just help yourself.”

Veronica nodded mutely and watched him climb the stairs two at a time. She couldn’t help the stab of disappointment she felt at knowing he was going to come back downstairs dressed. Going into the kitchen, she took in the caramel coloured marble worktops which contrasted perfectly with the cream coloured cupboards. Seeing the coffee machine, she managed to find herself a cup and poured herself some. She took a sip and grimaced at its bitter taste.

“Sugar’s in the cupboard to your right,” Logan told her as he entered the kitchen, now dressed in a pair of blue jeans and a dark green, polo shirt.

“Uh, thanks.” Leaning up, she opened the cupboard and grabbed the sugar pot, adding a spoonful to her cup. “That’s better,” she told him after taking another sip. All of a sudden he whipped the cup out of hands and emptied it down the sink. “Hey! What do you think you’re doing?”

“You shouldn’t be drinking that in your condition.”

Nodding sheepishly, she nodded her head. “Oops!”

“Oops? Is that all you can say? You should be taking better care of yourself. I’m surprised your dad…”

“He doesn’t know!” Her eyes fell and concentrated on the tiled floor as she spoke, “I-I only had it confirmed this week. I figured I was late due to stress at work or something and… Anyway, I wanted to talk to you first. I, um, I wanted to know where we stood before I broke the news to my dad and Alicia.”

Walking over to the refrigerator, Logan pulled out a carton of orange juice and poured some into two glasses, handing one to her before taking a long drink of his own. “Is it that bad that you have to break the news to him?”

She sighed. “I didn’t mean it like that… I just…he doesn’t know about us.”

“Well, there’s nothing for him to know, right? It’s not like we’re together in a relationship. You made that perfectly clear when you took off two years ago. If it hadn’t been for me being invited to Wallace’s wedding we wouldn’t have broken our run of not seeing each other and we wouldn’t be in this situation now.” Logan saw the look that suddenly appeared on her face and he wished he knew what she was thinking. He’d always prided himself on being able to read her but it seemed that was a thing of the past, much like their relationship.

“I knew I shouldn’t have come here…” Veronica muttered as she made to walk past him but was stopped by a hand wrapped around her wrist.

“You weren’t going to tell me, were you? About the baby?”

“It crossed my mind,” she admitted, “but deep down I knew you had a right to know.”

“And now you’re regretting your decision?”

“Yes! No! God, I don’t know. I don’t know, Logan,” she cried, her hands running through her hair. “You know, when the initial shock had worn off after my doctor confirmed I was pregnant, I was actually happy about it. I was happy that…”

“What?” he prompted a moment later when she still hadn’t continued. When she raised her eyes to him again, he saw they were filled with tears.

“I was happy that you were my baby’s father.”

Logan’s eyes widened with a mixture of shock and surprise at her words and a part of him couldn’t help but feel hopeful that she wanted the same thing he did; to get back together. Still, he wasn’t going to rush anything, not when it wasn’t just about the two of them anymore.

“That night we spent together after the wedding reception…it was so…amazing,” she choked out through her tears which were rolling down her cheeks. “And I wanted to tell you…I wanted to ask you for another chance but when I woke up--”

“I’d already gone,” he finished for her. “I couldn’t bear to be the one left behind again, Veronica, so I got in first. And hearing you say what you just did, let’s just say I feel like kicking my own ass,” he teased as he closed the short distance between them.

Veronica giggled but the laughter soon died away when she saw his eyes darken and the way he was suddenly looking at her. “Logan…”

Anything else she was going to say died away when his lips covered hers for the first time in four long months and her arms automatically wrapped around his neck at the same time as his wound their way around her waist, pulling her in flush against his body.

She knew they needed to talk, there was still so much to say but right now, talking was the last thing on her mind and she guessed that it was the last thing on Logan’s mind, too. Her fingers ran through his hair, caressing over the back of his neck and she felt him shiver in response. When the kiss eventually broke, she breathed in huge lungfuls of air while he sucked and nibbled on her neck, his hand slipping beneath her cable-knit sweater to stroke her back.

Veronica felt her entire body heat up from the light teasing touches he was bestowing upon her and grabbing each side of his head, she directed his mouth back to hers, trying to tell him without words just how much she wanted him. “Bed,” she whispered into his ear when the need for air once again became an issue.

Logan shook his head and she drew back from him to see what the problem was. “Too far,” he told her before his lips fused with hers once more and they were thrown back into the whirlwind.

Somehow they ended up on the kitchen floor, their clothes strewn all about the place. She watched his face carefully when he saw the tiny baby bump she was sporting for the first time and it was in that precise moment that she knew she didn’t have anything to worry about. His large hand spanned her tummy and touched it with such gentleness that it made her want to weep.

“You’re so beautiful,” he told her, his dark brown eyes meeting her blue ones.

Her own hands roamed all over his chest and stomach as she whispered, “So are you,” before cupping the back of his head and moving his face towards hers, her tongue flicking over the sensitive skin just inside his bottom lip.

“Veronica…”

“I-I’ve missed you,” she confessed. “I’ve missed you so much and I…I wanted to call you but I didn’t know if you wanted to hear from me.”

Logan’s large hands framed her face as he looked intently into her eyes. “I always want to hear from you,” he stated. “You can always call me.”

The weight that had been pressing onto Veronica’s chest ever since she had learned of her pregnancy immediately seemed to dissipate upon hearing his words and she breathed a soft sigh of relief. “I love you,” she told him, her nose rubbing against his and she saw the glassy sheen in his eyes.

One of the reasons their relationship had failed the last time was mainly due to Veronica’s reluctance to utter those three words. Whenever Logan would say them, she would respond with a “me too” rather than repeating them word for word and in the end he had told her he couldn’t be with her if she wasn’t prepared to commit to him the way he had to her. The very next day he had woken up to find her and all of her belongings gone.

“Do you mean it?” Logan asked.

“Yes. And before you ask, I’m not just suddenly saying it because I’m pregnant. If anything, it’s just made me wake up and realise how much you mean to me, how much you’ve always meant to me even when I didn’t show it.” She paused as she felt her throat grow tight with the tears she was suppressing. “I’m so sorr--”

“No! No more apologies, okay? Let’s just leave it that we’re both sorry and start with a clean slate. Agreed?”

Veronica nodded and they sealed the deal with a long, slow kiss that made her toes curl and her heart race wildly. So consumed was she that she almost missed it when Logan moved and picked her up. “What are you doing?”

“There’s no way our first time in four months is going to be on a cold, hard kitchen floor. We’re going to do this in comfort,” he told her, carrying her upstairs. Arriving in his bedroom, he tossed her onto his bed and watched her bounce on it wearing just her white silk panties which he hadn’t yet removed from her.

“Hey! I’m in a delicate condition here,” she teased. Her mouth dropped open when he pulled down his boxers and she unconsciously licked her lips in anticipation. One thing about their relationship over the years, the make up sex was always out of this world and she knew this make up would be no exception.

“You’re not the only one,” he joked, gesturing to the prominent erection that was curved up against his belly.

“So I see.”

Before she could move, Logan was crawling towards her, his eyes drinking her in as he did so. His large hands ran up and down her legs, reacquainting himself with the feel of her soft silky skin. They roamed higher and higher until they finally reached the thin waistband of her underwear and he dragged them ever-so-slowly down her hips and slender thighs. He could see the blonde curls at the apex of her thighs glistening with proof of her obvious arousal and he couldn’t wait to taste her.

Veronica felt her stomach hollow out at the intense way Logan was watching her and she felt herself grow even wetter. She mewled in the back of her throat when he parted her thighs and situated himself between them. The underside of his cock slid against her wet folds and her teeth sunk into her bottom lip as she revelled in the familiar sensation. His warm hands cupped and kneaded her breasts which she knew were already slightly larger thanks to her pregnancy and seeing the way his eyes were practically twinkling, she knew that he’d already discovered that little bonus.

Keeping his eyes trained on Veronica’s face, Logan lowered his head and licked around her left nipple, making sure not to touch the sensitive little nub. All too soon, she was crying out for him to suck it and giving her a smirk, he did as requested and sucked it hard, earning him a whole succession of breathy sighs and moans. He repeated the action on her other breast while his lower body ground against hers. Slipping a hand between them, he placed himself at her entrance and slid inside just a couple of inches, enough to whet her appetite for more.

“Don’t tease!” she told him, her hands gripping his ass cheeks and trying to force him further inside.

“But it’s such fun,” he told her, kissing down her throat and sucking on the delicate skin there. The feel of her nipples rubbing against his chest was so damn good and he couldn’t get enough of it. His whole body rocked against hers and he felt her tilt her pelvis back slightly so that he would slide in deeper. “God, you really want it, don’t you?”

“Yessss,” she hissed when he hit a particularly sensitive spot inside her as he sunk in further.

“Beg for it.”

“What?”

“C’mon, if you want it so much, I want to hear you beg.” Logan wondered if maybe he’d gone a bit too far but he saw the fire spark in her eyes and he grinned in response. His girl was definitely back.

Playfully biting his jaw, Veronica kissed her way up to his lips and then detoured along his cheek until her mouth was finally by his ear. “I want you…inside me…I want to feel every single inch of your hard cock pounding into me and--”

Logan immediately turned his head to the side and captured her lips with his, kissing her hard and fast, sliding his tongue into her mouth to tangle wetly with his while he thrust the rest of the way inside her. His hand massaged her breasts in turn, tugging at the nipples using the web of skin between his thumb and forefinger while the fingers of his other hand played with her clit.

Veronica panted breathlessly as she met each of Logan’s thrusts and on every down-stroke, she squeezed her internal muscles around him and if she had had the strength, she would have giggled at the way his eyes almost rolled into the back of head at that little trick. The fingers of one hand were buried in his thick dark hair while her other hand was splayed on his back, her fingernails curling into his skin as the sensations built towards their crescendo.

She nibbled his earlobe, whispering into it a whole plethora of naughty words which she knew were his undoing. “Fuck, Logan! You feel so good…so hard…”

“Give me your hand,” Logan choked out and as soon as she removed her hand from his hair, he interlaced their fingers, placing their joined hands on the pillow beside her head. Their eyes locked as each felt their orgasms fast approaching and when hers hit first, Veronica screamed his name, her thighs tightening around him as she rode out her climax.

A few strokes later and Logan toppled over the proverbial edge, too and they held each other’s gazes for a few moments before he collapsed on top of her, his breath coming in heavy pants against the sweaty skin of her shoulder.

“I didn’t hurt you, did I?” he managed to ask several minutes later when his breathing had returned to some semblance of normal.

“No, we’re fine,” she told him, knowing he was also asking about their baby.

Pushing himself up onto his forearms, he smiled down at her. “I love you, too. I didn’t get a chance to tell you before when we were downstairs and…”

“I already knew, Logan.” Her skin flushed a pretty pink colour as she corrected herself, “I mean, I hoped you did.”

“Well, as usual you were right,” he teased.

“I’m not always right,” she huffed.

“I didn’t say always, I said as usual.” Lowering his head, he kissed her softly before raising his head again, a smile stretched across his face. “You know, if you’d wanted me to be with you when you told Keith, you didn’t have to go to all this trouble.”

“You’re so funny,” she said, trying to keep a straight face and failing. The smile left her face when she decided to ask the question that she had pushed to the back of her mind. “Does this mean that we--”

“I want to try again, Veronica, and I’m hoping it means you do as well. Am I right?”

“Yes,” she stated simply. “It has to be for us though…not just because I’m pregnant.”

“I know and it is. If you hadn’t turned up here today, I’m pretty sure I’d have caved and either called or come to visit you. And besides, I’m pretty sure another hook-up would have happened between us at Dick and Mac’s wedding in a few months time.”

“You think?”

“Oh, I know. I mean, it’s customary for the best man and maid of honour to hook up so who are we to fight tradition,” he said, winking at her.

Pushing herself up onto her elbows, Veronica kissed his smiling lips. “You’re so right.” They shared another hot, sizzling kiss and once she had caught her breath, she asked, “So, we’re really doing this?”

“Yeah.” Shifting over onto his side, Logan placed his hand on her stomach and he gave her such a look of wonder that she felt her heart melt. “I can’t believe there’s a little person growing in there.”

Returning his smile, Veronica covered his hand with hers. “I know. He or she’s going to be a real handful if they take after either one of us,” she observed.

“Of that I have no doubt,” he teased. “Even more so if they take after both of us.”

“You know, pregnancy plays havoc on a woman’s hormones… I’ll probably be horny a lot of the time.”

Logan laughed, his lips curving up in that sexy smirk of his that she loved so much. “I think I’ll be able to handle it.”

“Hmm, I think maybe we should get practicing so that you’ll be in tip top form for when I’m craving sex. I mean, with the exception of what just happened, it’s been a while since we--”

“Four months, Veronica.”

“I know, a lifetime,” she whispered before pressing her lips urgently against his and kissing him hard.

“Yeah, a lifetime,” he repeated, giving himself over completely to the kiss.

The road ahead was bound to be a bumpy one—it always was where they were concerned, but at least now they had even more of a reason to try, to work harder at forming a solid relationship. One hurdle had already been overcome with the voicing of three little words and hopefully that in itself could now form a strong foundation for whatever else lay ahead for them.
