“Did I really sleep in that?” Jamie asked, kneeling on the carpeted floor and running his fingers over the white wooden slats of his old crib that was currently situated in the centre of the room. A dustsheet covered most of it since the nursery was still in the process of being decorated.

Nathan laughed at his son’s question and the surprise he could hear in his voice. “Yeah, buddy, you did,” he replied, glancing over at him before turning his attention back to the wall he was currently painting a pale lilac colour.

Having heard her little boy’s question as she entered the room, Haley also laughed. “You know something, once you’d started walking and had learned how to undo the safety latch, you were forever escaping from it,” she said as she walked over to him and ruffled his hair.

Jamie wore a perfect facsimile of his father’s smirk as he looked up at her. “Really?”

“Uh huh. One minute you were all tucked up in there and the next you were out and running… well, toddling for freedom,” she teased. Resting a hand on her lower back, she ran her other one over her large protruding stomach, trying to settle her daughter who was kicking up a storm. “Oof!”

“Is Nugget kicking again?” Nathan asked when he heard Haley’s exclamation and climbing down the stepladder, he placed the roller back into the paint tray and went over to her; running his own hand over her tummy in soothing circles.

“Yeah… she seems really active today for some reason,” she told him, leaning her body against his.

“Wow! Maybe she’s gonna be a soccer player,” Jamie said as he placed both palms on his mother’s bump and felt his unborn baby sister kick hard.

Haley chuckled at that. “You never know, Jimmy Jam. Maybe she won’t have any interest in basketball.” She burst out laughing at the shocked looks and gasps that comment elicited from both of her boys. “I’m just kidding.”

“I’m gonna teach her all about basketball,” the sandy haired little boy stated proudly. “We’ll just have to make sure she doesn’t find out what soccer is until she loves basketball as much as us, right, Daddy?”

Nathan started laughing at that and nodded as he went over and picked Jamie up, bringing him up to his and Haley’s eye level. “That’s a great idea, buddy.”

“Poor little Nugget’s not going to know what’s hit her,” she said, joining in with her husband’s laughter. She could easily picture her son making sure the family’s new addition was well schooled on the rules of basketball before she’d even learned to talk. No doubt one of her earliest words would be “ball” just like it had been with Jamie.

“So, what do you think of the room so far, Hales?” Nathan asked, gently lowering Jamie back down.

“It looks beautiful. You two have done a great job with it and now all we need is for Peyton to paint the mural on the far wall which she said she could do tomorrow.”

“Can I help?” Jamie asked, a hopeful look gracing his face.

“Of course you can, buddy. I’m sure Auntie Peyton will be glad to have you helping her out.”

Nathan smirked as he leaned forward and whispered into his wife’s ear, “And while Auntie Peyton is watching our boy, I’m sure we’ll be able to come up with something to occupy our time.”

Haley blushed at his words. “We’ll see,” she mumbled, although she had a feeling she’d be giving in only too easily what with her raging hormones.

“Oh, we will,” he told her, his hand still rubbing circles on her stomach but moving a little higher and brushing against the underside of her breast.

“Nathan!”

“Momma, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing, baby…” she replied, giving him a reassuring smile before scrunching her face up and gesturing towards Nathan with her thumb. “It’s just Daddy being silly and… uh, tickling me.”

“Yeah, we’ll see just how silly I am… later,” Nathan said, his smirk deepening.

Haley hadn’t failed to notice the darkening of his eyes and she felt that familiar tingle shoot through her body, making her feel even warmer than she was already. Giving herself a little mental shake to pull herself out of thoughts she really shouldn’t be having in front of her five-year-old son, she tried to ignore her husband’s presence which was no easy feat. “So, buddy, you feel up to helping me make some chocolate fudge brownies for dessert?”

“Yay! Can I lick the bowl?”

“Sure you can,” she said, smiling down at him. “C’mon, let’s leave Daddy to finish painting.”

Slipping his hand into his mother’s, Jamie nodded as they started to walk out of the nursery. “Do you wanna lick the bowl, too, Daddy?”

Haley quickly turned and gave Nathan a pointed look, knowing only too well what words might come out of his mouth in answer to his son’s innocent question. “Nath—”

“Yep, so you’d better save me some, buddy,” he teased. Raising his eyes, he gave Haley a wink and couldn’t hold back his laughter at the blush that coloured her cheeks.

“I can’t promise anything,” Jamie replied, giggling at the look on his father’s face before he let go of Haley’s hand and raced out of the room ahead of her.

“And off he goes again.” Nathan laughed as he walked over to his wife and wrapped his arms around her. “Any chance you can make a bit extra and hide it away so we can, uh, play with it later?”

“I’ll see what I can do,” Haley told him, raising her face towards his as he leaned down, their lips meeting halfway. Visions of licking the sticky chocolate mix off of each other giving the kiss an even more intense feel.

“Momma!”

“Coming, baby,” she called back, her voice sounding a little breathless to her own ears. Seeing the look on Nathan’s face at her choice of words, she shook her head. “Not a peep out of you.”

“Hey, I didn’t say a word!”

“Uh huh…” she mumbled, her tongue firmly in her cheek. “Oh, and don’t worry if I can’t keep Jamie away from the extra brownie mix… I’ve got that can of chocolate frosting hidden away which we can put to good use.”

Nathan’s mouth dropped open as Haley walked out of the room. Before she disappeared from view, she turned and threw him a sexy smile from over her shoulder and, as he watched her, all he could think was that he couldn’t wait to have his dessert tonight.
