WHAT a BUSY WEEK!
We certainly jumped right into the second semester... a little later than planned, but we're happy that the kids got to enjoy some fun in the snow! Students continue to work hard tapping out words that have short vowels in the middle. We have been practicing reading and writing these "cvc" words (words that have a consonant at the beginning and end and a short vowel in the middle.) In math, we have returned to number sense - identifying and building sets of 0 - 20 objects, identifying the number that is one more and/or one less than a given number, counting backwards from 20 to 1 and counting from 1 – 100 by ones and by tens. In social studies, we learned about Martin Luther King Jr. and how he dreamed of a world where everyone would be treated equally. Students shared their dreams of how they can make the world a better place and we all agreed that being nice and kind are very important. That's great advice from some five and six year olds!
REMINDERS
*PLEASE be sure your child reads the four books in his/her book bag daily and returns the bag every Friday. It is so important for children to read every day. The more they read the better readers they become.
*In addition to having your child practice reading our sight words, it is also important for them to practice writing these words. At this time of the year, every student should be able to write a few sentences using sight words and stretching out sounds to make other words. For example, "I will go to the prc." or "I can see a brown dog."
*PLEASE send a jacket for outside recess. We've had several kids without jackets this week and it was cold! We go outside at 11:00 and it is often chilly at that time, even when the high temperature is 60 degrees for the day.
*PLEASE put your child’s name in all jackets, sweaters, hoodies, hats, gloves, water bottles, etc. If they misplace something, we can easily get it back to you.
FYI...
Individual and class pictures will be taken on Tuesday, February 4th.
100 Days of School
The projects for the 100th Day of School are due on Monday, January 27th. These will be displayed in the hallway, so please be sure that they are made on something that can be hung on the wall.
We will be celebrating the 100th Day of School on Tuesday, February 4th by doing some fun activities involving the number 100! Be on the lookout next week for a Sign-Up Genius requesting snack donations for our celebration! We appreciate your support.
BOOK BAGS
All students need to keep their reading bags (and library books) in their backpacks when they are not reading them.
There are some students who are not reading their books at home and are having difficulty keeping up in class. Please help your child become a confident and fluent reader by having him/her read everyday. It is so very important.
PERSEVERANCE
The character trait for the month of January is perseverance. In guidance, students will learn that perseverance means " the ability to keep working hard and not give up, even when things are difficult."
