Turkey Protection Squad
Today first graders brought home one of our favorite projects. We are helping the turkeys stay safe leading up to Thanksgiving. We read the book Turkey Trouble . In this book, the turkey uses creativity to go undercover and avoid the farmer who is looking for a Thanksgiving meal. Students will use the same creative ideas and materials at home to "disguise" their turkeys. At school they will write about their turkeys and display the writing along with the turkeys in the hall. It makes for a fun and engaging gallery walk closer to Thanksgiving. The note below is attached to the turkey with the due date for additional reference.
Return by October 31
Next week we will work on Data Analysis which includes graphing.
In reading, we will work on constructing answers in response to a book using text evidence and critical thinking. We will take a pre-assessment on Monday and work to improve our reading responses.
We are continuing to work on our narrative writing unit. We are continuing to add details to our stories in our words and illustrations.
In Science we will be learning about Earth's natural materials and how we use them.
In social studies, we will study about the characteristics of good citizenship and the role of citizens in a constitutional republic, including the importance of voting. Students will be introduced to the idea of patriotism and how we demonstrate our patriotism through national symbols, holidays, and events.
Language Arts: I can use text evidence to answer questions about a text.
Math: I can collect, sort, and organize data in graphs. I can analyze graphs and draw conclusions. I can generate questions about data.
Science: Animals have different external structures, such as birds, mammals, and fish, that help them meet their basic needs for survival. Animals grow and change. Many young animals resemble their parents. Life cycles show how animals go through a pattern where they are born or hatched, grow, and become adults.
Social Studies: I can explain that a community is a group of people who live and learn in the same place.
Please reach out when you would like to schedule a conference! I am free most days at 1:20 for an in-person or webex conference!
We learned about making inferences in reading this week. Students used context clues and what we know to infer while reading.
We love using critical thinking to solve non-routine problems on Fridays! This encourages thinking outside the box and creative problem solving.
