Dear Parents,
We had the most wonderful DOT DAY here in 2nd grade. We solved challenging "dot" puzzles in math, stretched our brains by creating images from simple holes in our papers, played the "dot game" with partners, and completed a STEM challenge in which we designed zip lines for our "dots" to take a ride!
In second grade we like to build and create! We would appreciate any of the items listed below. One man's trash is another man's treasure! Thank you for all your support at home!
Ms. Bell and Ms. Herrera
Classroom teachers are limited in what snacks they can provide here at school to students. Due to the various allergies on campus, teachers can have Veggie Straws or Skinny Pop (both regular flavor) as classroom snacks.
Most students bring their own snacks daily, but occasionally some forget, which is why we have some on hand. As you can imagine, we can tend to run out of snacks if we have a week where lots of kiddos have forgotten to bring a snack. We would appreciate anyone who is able to send in snack-sized bags of Veggie Straws (sea salt) or Skinny Pop. Thank you!
Language Arts: Generating Ideas and Self-Awareness Stations
I can use a draw start to generate ideas for my writing.
I can add details to my writing to capture my reader's attention.
I can use resources to spell words correctly.
I can practice fluent reading with appropriate rate and expression.
I can read and respond to a text by justifying my opinions in a shared inquiry discussion.
Math: Place Value
I can identify intervals on number lines and use the intervals to determine missing numbers on a number line.
I can locate the position of a given whole number on an open number line.
I can identify a whole number that corresponds to a given point on a number line.
Science: Matter and Materials
I can classify matter by observable physical properties, including texture, flexibility, and relative temperature, and identify whether a material is a solid or a liquid.
I can investigate how physical properties can be changed through processes such as cutting, folding, sanding, melting, or freezing.
I can demonstrate that small units such as building blocks can be combined or reassembled to form new objects for different purposes and explain the materials chosen based on their physical properties.
Social Studies: What Do Good Citizens Do?
I can explain what characteristics of good citizenship that my important person displays, and share information about their contributions to society.
I can explore careers that I want to learn more about.
Picture day is Monday, September 16th. These are the pictures that are in the yearbook so please send your child to school in clothes you would be okay with in the yearbook!
The video below shows how growth mindset ignites the brain. Enjoy!
Have you heard of the website Hoagies' Gifted Education? It has several resources for parents and educators in the support of highly gifted children. We highly recommend you check it out!
We have the most INCREDIBLE PTA here at Glenhope. Please check out their website to learn more!
From our principal, Dr. Griffin:
Our community has always supported our school in so many ways, for which we are very grateful. One of the traditions that has long been in place is our annual Greenback giving campaign, which we use to supplement the budget provided by the district.
Many years ago, Glenhope parents stated their preference for an opportunity to donate rather than having students participate in fundraisers. That has continued to be our practice, and we have been able to supplement classroom and building requests through our community’s generosity. There is now an option for you to donate by using a credit card through the district’s RevTrack system.
Gifts made to Glenhope should be tax deductible (per IRS tax code section 170), but you will want to confirm with your tax advisor. We will furnish a form acknowledging your contribution. Some corporations match donations, so I would encourage you to investigate that possibility as well. We received an estimated additional $4,000 - 5,000 last year from matching corporate donations.
As a reminder, we have two snack times during the day. Please be sure to send nut-free (NO PEANUTS OR TREE NUTS) snacks.
Thank you for keeping everyone safe!
Please make sure your child comes to school prepared each day with a charged ipad. Please write names on lunch boxes, water bottles, ipad chargers, and head phones.
Please make sure you complete the District Background Check every year. Forms must be completed and approved before you will be allowed to volunteer at the school or on field trips.
We'll keep this section in here for a while as we find it to be an important one!
We would like to provide additional support at school if your family is experiencing difficulties at home.
If your child is coming to school after a difficult night, morning or weekend please email me with the words "Handle with Care." Nothing else will be said or asked. This will let me know that your child may need extra time, patience, or support during the day.
Most Fridays we will go to the school library in the morning. 2nd graders can check out two books at a time, and should bring books back to check out new ones on Fridays as they finish books.
Thanks for your help in making sure books come back each Friday. Better yet, make a habit of storing the library books in your child's backpack so they are always there!
