Turkey Protection Squad
Last Friday first graders brought home one of our favorite projects. We are helping the turkeys stay safe leading up to Thanksgiving. We read the book Turkey Trouble . In this book, the turkey uses creativity to go undercover and avoid the farmer who is looking for a Thanksgiving meal. Students will use the same creative ideas and materials at home to "disguise" their turkeys. At school they will write about their turkeys and display the writing along with the turkeys in the hall. It makes for a fun and engaging gallery walk closer to Thanksgiving.Ā The note below is attached to the turkey with the due date for additional reference.

We worked on Data Analysis which includes collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.
In reading, we worked on constructing answers in response to a book using text evidence and critical thinking. We took a pre-assessment on Monday which will be a baseline to improve our reading responses.Ā
We continued to strengthen our narrative writing skills. We are continued to find ways to make our stories more interesting to read by adding details to our stories in our words and illustrations.
In Science, we will learned about Earth's natural materials and how we use them.Ā
In social studies, we will studied about the characteristics of good citizenship and the role of citizens in a constitutional republic, including the importance of voting. Students will be introduced to the idea of patriotism and how we demonstrate our patriotism through national symbols, holidays, and events.Ā
Language Arts: I can use text evidence to answer questions about a text.Ā
Math: I can collect, sort, and organize data in graphs. I can analyze graphs and draw conclusions. I can generate questions about data.Ā
Science: I can identify and describe how plants, animals, and humans use rocks, soil, and water.
Social Studies: I can explain that a community is a group of people who live and learn in the same place.Ā
Students have their own editing checklist so they can take ownership over their writing. They use it to edit their spelling, handwriting, and punctuation.Ā
Here is an example of a Data Analysis number talk. Number talks promote wonderful mathematical conversations!
