This week in math we continued our unit on addition and subtraction. We worked really hard on solving for unknowns in equations. For example, ___ + 3 = 10 - 2. This was a challenging concept for the kids. We also used the Problem Solving Process to solve addition problems.
In reading, we worked on retelling books we read. We began by learning about what Retelling is and analyzed examples of weak vs. strong retells. We used a rubric to help us with this work and practiced our own retells during independent reading time. Later in the week, we self-assessed our retells and set goals on how to make them better.
We are continuing to work on our narrative writing unit. We brainstormed ideas and focused down on a "small moment". For example, a trip to Disney World is a big topic, whereas riding on Splash Mountain is a "small moment". In social studies, our community unit is continuing with learning on being part of a community and authority figures in the community. We are continuing to work on our Citizenship Project which will be presented to the kindergarteners soon!
Our science unit on objects and materials continues through early October. We will learn about classifying objects, sorting by characteristics, weight, systems and how things can be changed by heating and cooling.
Next week in ELAR we will be learning about retelling books we read. We will incorporate a Retell Rubric so kids can analyze their work and set goals to make it better!
Picture day is Monday, September 16th. These are the pictures that are in the yearbook so please send your child to school in clothes you would be okay with in the yearbook!
Language Arts: I can make predictions and check my predictions as I read. I can write narrative stories about my own life.
Math: I can represent addition or subtraction word problems by using appropriate strategies such as concrete objects, pictorial models, and number sentences.
Science: I can describe an object's properties.
Social Studies: I can explain that a community is a group of people who live and learn in the same place.
Students self-assessed their Retell and added their name to our Retell Rubric.
We generated a list of narrative writing topics and then narrowed those down to a "small moment". This allows students to be much more detailed in their writing!
