WE DID IT! We completed a full week of first grade and set final class lists. You should have received an email from your child's homeroom teacher for the school year. Everyone is getting settled for a fun year of learning in first grade.
This week we worked on graphing and data analysis in math and tested High Frequency Words in reading for our first 2 modules of Into Reading. Students have a word list to practice in class that will help them work towards mastery of the first grade words. These words are part of our reading curriculum, HMH Into Reading. The word lists are from the research based Dolce and Fry most commonly used words.Ā
Next week first graders will complete their beginning of year assessments.Ā They will be using a new assessment tool adopted by the district called i-Ready. It assesses students in both math and reading to establish a baseline and then tailors lessons for targeted and individualized instruction. Our students will be doing it independently on their iPads with headphones, which is new for our grade level. We are interested and excited to see the growth they will achieve. Please join us for our Parent Information Night next Thursday @ 6 PM in the Glenhope Learning Commons.
Today the first graders will bring home a project to be returned by September 6. These will hang in the hall and give them a chance to get to know their fellow "First Grators". There is a photo example below. Students can use photos, illustrations or text to represent their favorite things with as much or as little detail as they want.Ā They always turn out great, and the children love seeing the creativity.Ā Ā
Please join us in the Learning Commons, Thursday, August 29th from 6:00 - 6:45 PM for a Parent Information Night. We will discuss curriculum, grading, events, and our new assessment tool. If you are unable to attend, we have a small handout that will go home with your child the following day. You are always welcome to schedule a conference with your child's teacher if you miss and want more detailed information.
