We are slowly finding our groove in the swamp with each day and week that passes. One crucial aspect of 5th grade is time management, which we frequently discuss to help prepare your kiddos for life as middle schoolers. We want them to learn to manage their time well with us in hopes of it being a habit for them going forward (and it can help reduce the amount of homework they have throughout middle and high school). As we all know, with growth comes growing pains, and we will be helping your kiddos work through some here at school (time management, becoming strong self-advocates, and effective communication and collaboration, to name a few).
Your kiddos are not the only ones who grow during the school year. We teachers do, too. Students are often surprised to hear we teachers learn from them each year, but this shared growth is one of the best parts of being an educator. We will continue to help your children become even more confident learners, and they will help us become even better teachers. Together, we will make this a fantastic year. Thank you for sharing your kiddos with us!

Parents, our 5th Grade Committee is already hard at work planning a special graduation day for our Gators in May. We are looking for several companies who may be interested in helping to sponsor our 5th-grade graduation. Sponsorships would be $500 and help cover costs, including class t-shirts, invitations, programs, the 5th-grade legacy gift, and food and entertainment for our 5th-grade Gators at graduation. If your company would be interested or you know someone who may be interested, please have them email Melissa Cross at 5thcommittee@glenhopepta.org for more information.
6-week progress reports were available on Wednesday, September 25th on Skyward. We also sent a paper copy home. Please review those, sign, and return to school. Thank you!
As a reminder, students will have until Tuesday, October 8th, to turn in all late work (the Tuesday before the end of the 9-week grading period). After that time, the assignment will remain as a 1% in the grade book.
We aim to meet with each of you to discuss whether your child is struggling at school or not! We have created a Sign Up Genius (linked below) for you to sign up for a conference. Teachers have a professional development day next week on Mon (9/23). We have been told that we can schedule parent conferences in the morning. Additionally, we have been given a half-day sub on Tuesday, 10/1, to do additional conferences during the school day. The remaining conferences are mostly Tuesdays and Thursdays during our conference time (11:20-12:00) for the remainder of the year.
We have blocked out only two days a week for conferences because we typically have intervention meetings, team meetings, committee meetings, etc., on other days. If you look at the Sign Up Genius and find that no date or time works for you, please let us know, and we can organize with you 1:1.
We have a goal this year for all 5th-grade students (and teachers) to complete 12 hours of community service outside of the school day by the end of the year (6 hours per semester). Students who achieve 6 hours by December 13, 2024, and an additional 6 hours by May 9, 2025, will receive a party to celebrate their achievements. When your child completes community service, please be sure they are logging their time in the Google Form linked below. We have hung a tracker poster (pictured here to the right) in the 5th-grade hallway to track the hours completed as the school year progresses. We cannot wait to see the tracker fill up!
Also, if you snap photos of your child during community service, please send them to us! We would love to see the work they are doing.

View the video below to learn the differences between a fixed and a growth mindset. It highlights the fact that no one can be completely growth-minded, but we can try to be as growth-minded as possible.
