This year 5th graders are volunteering their time for community service. This information and link is for a time to play board games with 5th graders from Glenhope. One of them has a first grade sibling, so they want to share their excitement about playing games with first grade Gators. It sounds like a fun opportunity for the kids to enjoy some time together outside of school.
This is Matthew's Zevakhin mom. Matthew likes board games and participates in community hours project. He did in the past an event for local library where kids played board games, so we planned the same here. I asked 5th graders if they have kids who'd like to join and we found another Matthew from Ms. Hayes's classroom. They met, played games and decided what they offer for the first graders.
I shared this invitation to the FB group for the first graders, but I wanted to share with you if you know kids. This is a google sign up for the free board games event for just Glenhope First graders where both Matthews will play with first graders. We hope to get 4-6 kids, we don't even need more or will do another event for everyone who signs up.
I decided to share this link with you as we plan it for Oct, 13 and in case you know kids who are interested and would like to join:
This week in math we continued our unit on addition and subtraction. We are practicing combinations of 10, building fact fluency with games and centers and will continue solving and writing story problems as a part of this unit. Next week we will review all of the skills and TEKS, as our unit assessment is Friday, October 4.
In reading, we worked on story structure again and added in studying character traits in various stories. One of the things first graders work on is making connections to stories through real life. They enjoy reading stories, discussing the character traits and emotions while making connections to their own experiences. It's an effective tool for practicing comprehension as well as vocabulary study.Ā
We continue to work on writing during our literacy time as well as through journal writing. This week we wrote Thank You notes to Officer Romero.Ā
In social studies, our community unit is continuing with learning on being part of a community and authority figures in the community.Ā
Our science unit on objects and materials continues through early October. We will learn about classifying objects, sorting by characteristics, weight, systems and how things can be changed by heating and cooling.Ā
Next week, we will be in Module 3 of HMH. It is called "Amazing Animals". The Family letters are below.
Many of you have scheduled or had parent conferences and discussed i-Ready data. Next Thursday, your child's results will be sent home via email. If you have questions, please contact your child's teacher to discuss.Ā
Please make every effort to read your child's homework book each night. Daily reading impacts progress and skills that we practice in class. Many of the children can read words at a higher level than they are able to comprehend. We work on fluency, accuracy, comprehension and prosody as well as phonics skills. As we see progress in all of these areas, students will gradually move to more difficult material.
Language Arts: I can spell words using sound-spelling patterns. I can read high frequency words. I can build my reading stamina. I can write narrative stories about my own life. Assess next 2 modules of HF words October 30
