We've reached the end of the first six weeks of school, and progress reports will be available next Wednesday. Progress is all about forward momentum and growth. The first nine weeks of 5th-grade always come with growing pains before we settle in and feel comfortable. The transition from standards-based report cards to letter grades is confusing for most students; there are often some growing pains as they get used to Canvas, trying to keep track of their assignments and understand the weight of a zero and its impact on their overall grade. We've discussed time management and how it impacts work completion and quality. All these moving parts can feel overwhelming to kiddos, so we work on strengthening them throughout the year. Building confidence is a marathon, not a sprint, and we want our students to avoid seeking perfection at the cost of fracturing their confidence. Mr. Wahpekeche has a motto he shares with them to help: "We seek growth over time, not perfection on a dime." Growth also requires balance, which begins with us taking those first, sometimes uncertain, steps toward the future, and we are ready to do whatever we can to tip the scales in their favor.

Parents, our 5th Grade Committee is already hard at work planning a special graduation day for our Gators in May. We are looking for several companies who may be interested in helping to sponsor our 5th-grade graduation. Sponsorships would be $500 and help cover costs, including class t-shirts, invitations, programs, the 5th-grade legacy gift, and food and entertainment for our 5th-grade Gators at graduation. If your company would be interested or you know someone who may be interested, please have them email Melissa Cross at 5thcommittee@glenhopepta.org for more information.
Six-week progress reports will be available on Skyward next Wednesday, September 25th. We will also send a paper copy home for you to review, sign, and return next week.
We have several students who have had multiple late assignments for over a week now. Those grades have been entered as ONE PERCENT and will be reflected in the 6-week progress report. Students will have until Tuesday, October 8th, to turn in all late work (the Tuesday before the end of the 9-week grading period). After that time, the assignment will remain at 1% in the grade book.
If you receive an email that your child has a late assignment and they are sure they turned it in, please have them go into Canvas and read the feedback on the assignment. Students often have to make corrections or change the share settings on the assignment so we can view it. Just because they have turned it in on Canvas doesn't mean it is finished. We appreciate your help reminding them to check their grades often in Canvas!
We aim to meet with each of you to discuss whether your child is struggling at school or not! We have created a Sign Up Genius (linked below) for you to sign up for a conference. Teachers have a professional development day next week on Mon (9/23). We have been told that we can schedule parent conferences in the morning. Additionally, we have been given a half-day sub on Tuesday, 10/1, to do additional conferences during the school day. The remaining conferences are mostly Tuesdays and Thursdays during our conference time (11:20-12:00) for the remainder of the year.
We have blocked out only two days a week for conferences because we typically have intervention meetings, team meetings, committee meetings, etc., on other days. If you look at the Sign Up Genius and find that no date or time works for you, please let us know, and we can organize with you 1:1.
Today, all chaperones will receive an email stating their application status. We hope to get it to you by 5:00 p.m. We want to thank everyone who applied and appreciate your willingness to volunteer your time to help us. If, for some reason, you don't receive an email notifying you of your chaperone status by 5:00 p.m., please reach out to Miss Hayes (christina.hayes@gcisd.net).
We have a goal this year for all 5th-grade students (and teachers) to complete 12 hours of community service outside of the school day by the end of the year (6 hours per semester). Students who achieve 6 hours by December 13, 2024, and an additional 6 hours by May 9, 2025, will receive a party to celebrate their achievements. When your child completes community service, please be sure they are logging their time in the Google Form linked below. We have hung a tracker poster (pictured here to the right) in the 5th-grade hallway to track the hours completed as the school year progresses. We cannot wait to see the tracker fill up!
Also, if you snap photos of your child during community service, please send them to us! We would love to see the work they are doing.
