If you are interested in GT Lead testing for your child, the window is open and will close December 20. Contact your child's teacher if you are interested but uncertain.
We hope everyone has had a smooth transition back after the Thanksgiving holiday break.
This week students began their middle of the year iReady assessments in math and reading. Dr. Griffin mentioned in an email recently that the district will determine a date for those reports to be sent home. It will likely be after the holiday break.
In math, we continue our current study of Place Value to 99. During this unit, we are working on building numbers with models, objects and tens and ones. We will practice skip counting, counting forwards and backwards, comparing numbers using <,>,= and building sets that represent numbers larger or smaller than a given number. We are also learning how to represent numbers in standard form, picture form, word form and expanded form.
In reading and language arts, we are working on making connections to stories and characters. Students enjoy making personal connections to what they are reading. Different ways we make those connections are personal experiences or other books/stories that remind us of something we've read. It is an important tool for comprehension and comparison. We are continuing to work on writing during our literacy time as well as through journal writing and the practice of spelling high frequency words. We continue to focus on proper usage of capitalization, punctuation, spelling and adding meaningful details.
In the coming weeks, we will be studying holidays around the world, and Mrs. Griffard has planned another Connect to Texas activity for our grade level. We enjoy getting the whole grade level together for activities, and we appreciate Mrs. Griffard's work to include everyone in these enrichment activities.
This morning, we will be participating in another Connect to Texas program for our grade level mixer. Students will hear a story of perseverance and learn about some of the science of water.
Spotlight Storytime: Snowflake Bentley
Amon Carter Museum of American Art
Join us for this Spotlight event to learn about this story of perseverance and triumph. We will learn about Wilson Alwyn Bentley or "Snowflake Bentley," whose love of snow and determination made contributions to art, but also to understanding snowflakes firsthand. Our little learners will learn about water crystal formations, snowflake facts, and the reward of perseverance all through the Carters collection.
We enjoyed a performance from the Texas Boy's Choir this week!
HOUR OF CODE
This week in library, Mrs. Jaffray, worked with students on several coding activities during their library time. Next week students will participate in Hour of Code. They will have opportunities to practice some of the things they have learned in Makerspace and use those skills in district provided activities. It is always a fun and exciting time for them to learn new things. Below are some of the apps we may be adding to iPads from Meraki. As always, we ask that students not add apps outside of school so we can keep battery life and data storage at positive levels for classroom usage and learning.
We hope you are able to come enjoy the Fall Gallery Walk. Mrs. Towery works tirelessly to showcase each child's artistic talent. The work they do brings our halls to life! The Hatchling Choir will be performing. It will be an opportunity for your child to see an exciting program he/she may want to try next year in 2nd grade. 🎨
