This week in math we continued our unit on addition and subtraction. We are practicing combinations of 10, learning some new games and centers for fact fluency. We will be working on solving and writing story problems as a part of this unit as well.Ā
In reading, we worked on story structure again and added in studying character traits in various stories. One of the things first graders work on is making connections to stories through real life. They enjoy reading stories, discussing the character traits and emotions while making connections to their own experiences. It's an effective tool for practicing comprehension as well as vocabulary study.
We are continuing to work on writing during our literacy time as well as through journal writing. Each day, students write in a journal and illustrate the story. Sometimes finding a topic can be a challenge for some, so they may appreciate talking with a parent or family member about some possible topics. Many of them write about a vacation, party, sports game or practice, movie night or other family event. We focus on proper usage of capitalization, punctuation, spelling and meaningful ideas that follow the same story line.
In social studies, our community unit is continuing with learning on being part of a community and authority figures in the community.Ā
Our science unit on objects and materials continues through early October. We will learn about classifying objects, sorting by characteristics, weight, systems and how things can be changed by heating and cooling.
Next week, we begin Module 2 in HMH for English Language Arts. It ties in nicely with our social studies, as it focuses on family and community.
Remember to return the All About me tee. Ā It does not have to be fancy.
