What are we learning in GT Lead?
1st Grade - Game Maker
2nd Grade - Brain Research
3rd Grade - Building A Business
4th Grade - Enigmas
5th Grade - Geometric Wonders
The first graders finished presented to PTA thier idea to help reduce food waste and to help students with extra food for lunch and snacks. The PTA has graciously agreed to fund their school project. We are starting a new unit called game maker where the students will analyze the elements of board games and the role each element plays in the game. Students will then gain an understanding of the Design Thinking Process and how it relates to creating games.
Second Grade
Second Grade GT LEADers finished their challenge on simple machines and presented to the class. The students had to create a wolf trap to safely capture the wolf incorporating two simple machines. The students then demonstrated how their invention worked. Next up is brain research. In this unit we will gain a basic understanding of how the brain works and the basic parts and functions of each part of the brain working together. Students will recognize the interacting parts of the brain as a system that works together to perform tasks.
Third Grade
Students started a new unit called "Building A Business" which generates an understanding of marketing, consumer awareness, and business models by studying the games and toys industry. Students created a timeline of favorite toys over their own lifetime and then worked in small groups to research succesful toy companies and why they were successful.
Fourth Grade
The 4th graders finished their Detective School unit by analyzing powder residue left at a scene and solving several cases. They are now exploring a variety of enigmas in order to find one that sparks an interest to learn more about it. Over the next few weeks students will investigate theories about the cause of the enigma and hypothesize the cause of the enigma.
The fifth grade scholars completed presentations on their authentic research project. We have now started a new unit on Geometric Wonders. First up is tessellations! Fifth graders learned about tessellations and how to create a translation, reflective and rotation tessellation.
