The Countdown Has Begun!
Throughout this week, we've overheard students talking about how many days there are until Christmas Break, and some conversations were quite animated. Some wish today was the last day, but others are excited about our holiday party and all-school sing-along. Nevertheless, they are counting the days until the break! We had to temper some of their excitement by explaining we need to remain focused on academics as we countdown. Trying to coast into these breaks is easy, but we want to continue working on stamina, focus, and perseverance; however, we will have moments of fun mixed in with the academics.
We've worked to wrap up our middle-of-the-year I-Ready assessments and completed some unit and nine-week assessments. This is why we have talked to your kiddos about stamina, focus, and perseverance. Each presents us with a snapshot of their progress from the beginning of school or the beginning of a unit to now. We continue to be so proud of how hard your kiddos work. Time is flying by this year, and we look forward to the progress we know your children will continue to make throughout the rest of the year.

On Friday, December 20th, fifth graders will be watching a holiday movie together. They will be able to choose from 4 different movies, which will be shown in each of the 5th-grade teacher's classrooms. We have put the titles of the movies below. If you have a problem with your child watching any of the movies, please reach out to us so we can make sure they don't choose that particular movie to watch. Thanks!
The Muppet Christmas Carol
Elf
Arthur Christmas
Home Alone
The end of the 9 weeks is Friday, December 20th. Please help your child complete their late/missing work by Tuesday, December 17th. Canvas and Skyward are great places to keep track of the work they owe!
Yearbook Artwork
This year, the yearbook theme is “Gators Glow.” Draw Spike (our mascot) among glow sticks or surrounded by neon lights. Create a "dance party" scene that features silhouettes of students with glowing accessories or use abstract shapes and lines that look like they are glowing, with gradients transitioning between colors. Consider incorporating geometric patterns that resemble neon signs and lights. Make sure your picture is drawn on 8 ½ x 11” white paper, you may use color. You can add backgrounds, but no tiny details. Please put your name and teacher’s name on the back. Your picture is due by January 31st to your homeroom teacher. Feel free to fill out the information below and attach to the back of your picture, but it is not required (you can simply write your information on the back of your illustration).
Note: One piece of art per class will go into the yearbook. Students in each class will vote on the artwork they would like to have illustrated on their homeroom’s yearbook page.

We are reminding you that all community service hours for 5th graders are due TODAY. We have a community service celebration next week, so we need to know who has completed their 6 hours to plan for it properly.
Please use the form below to log your child's hours. Some children have been logging their hours, so please check with them first so there are no duplicates :-) We were also told that some are participating in a volunteer event this weekend. If that is the case for your child, please fill in the log by Monday 12/16. We are so proud of how many hours students have volunteered to give back to their community!
We kindly ask that students bring their jackets or coats to school daily. The temperatures will be unpredictable, so it is better to have one. Any student who doesn't have a jacket or coat when it is below a specific temperature outside cannot go out for recess. Thank you!
We aim to meet with each of you to discuss whether your child is struggling at school or not! We have created a Sign Up Genius (linked below) for you to sign up for a conference. Teachers have a professional development day next week on Mon (9/23). We have been told that we can schedule parent conferences in the morning. Additionally, we have been given a half-day sub on Tuesday, 10/1, to do additional conferences during the school day. The remaining conferences are mostly Tuesdays and Thursdays during our conference time (11:20-12:00) for the remainder of the year.
We have blocked out only two days a week for conferences because we typically have intervention meetings, team meetings, committee meetings, etc., on other days. If you look at the Sign Up Genius and find that no date or time works for you, please let us know, and we can organize with you 1:1.
We have a goal this year for all 5th-grade students (and teachers) to complete 12 hours of community service outside of the school day by the end of the year (6 hours per semester). Students who achieve 6 hours by December 13, 2024, and an additional 6 hours by May 9, 2025, will receive a party to celebrate their achievements. When your child completes community service, please be sure they are logging their time in the Google Form linked below. We have hung a tracker poster (pictured here to the right) in the 5th-grade hallway to track the hours completed as the school year progresses. We cannot wait to see the tracker fill up!
Also, if you snap photos of your child during community service, please send them to us! We would love to see the work they are doing.
Carter/Robertson/Wahpekeche Community Service Log
SO FAR, 5TH GRADE STUDENTS ARE OVER 480 HOURS FOR THIS SEMESTER!
Also, if you snap photos of your child during their community service, please send them our way! We would love to see the work they are doing. We have included some photos we have received so far (to the right). It makes our hearts so happy to see students volunteering in their community!

We thought this acrostic (below) was a great reminder of how to show grit and persevere. We are still working on that last one: take the time to do it right. As we move into the second semester, we will be requiring more thoughtful effort in everyday work.
We know we aren't perfect. Please click the link below and give us feedback on the first two weeks of school. We'd love to improve, and we'd appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance!
