Dear Parents,
It has been another fabulous week in 2nd Grade! One of the highlights was meeting with our 5th grade reading buddies for the first time! There are so many wonderful benefits to having a reading buddy, such as improved reading skills and fluency, being a part of a positive reading community, and increased confidence. It is exciting to watch these reading relationships grow and develop over the school year!
Have a wonderful weekend, and thank you for all you're doing at home to support your child here at school! We know it is no small task and we appreciate all of you!

Language Arts: Seed Stories and Reader's Responses
I can plan and draft a small moment personal narrative story.
I can add details to my writing to capture my reader's attention.
I can use resources to spell words correctly.
I can read and respond to a text by justifying my opinions in a shared inquiry discussion.
I can work collaboratively with others to read and respond to a text.
Math: Addition and Subtraction
I can solve 2 and 3 digit addition problems without regrouping.
I can solve multi-step word problems using multiple strategies.
Science: Matter and Materials
I can classify matter by observable physical properties, including texture, flexibility, and relative temperature, and identify whether a material is a solid or a liquid.
I can investigate how physical properties can be changed through processes such as cutting, folding, sanding, melting, or freezing.
I can demonstrate that small units such as building blocks can be combined or reassembled to form new objects for different purposes and explain the materials chosen based on their physical properties.
Social Studies: Careers, Research, and Contributions to Society
I can collect information about a career of my choice and prepare to present my information to the class.
I can design a product that communicates how my chosen career contributes to the wellbeing of individuals and the community.
Thursday, Nov. 7th is the proposed date for our 2nd Grade Field Trip to the Fort Worth Zoo. There IS a chance that this date could be rescheduled due to weather, but we are hoping to attend on that day! We will send out more information about this field trip as we get closer to that date, but please know that if you are planning on volunteering to chaperone this field trip, you will need to have your GCISD background check completed. The process takes several weeks to go through our system, so doing this now is highly recommended! District Background Check
We plan to offer several options for conferences this year to accommodate families.
We will send out a google form next week for you to notify us of your preference.
Option 1: Email Update
Option 2: Phone Conference
Option 3: In-Person Conference
Families who have had a recent in-person or phone conference do not need to schedule a conference at this time unless they have additional questions or concerns.
Please be on the look-out for more information coming next week, including a google form that will allow you to choose your preferred way to update you on your child's progress, and a sign-up genius form to sign up for in-person conferences if that is your preference.
6-week progress reports will be available next Wednesday, September 28th on Skyward.
Did you know there are a ton of support groups on Facebook for parents of GT children? Check them out here:
Classroom teachers are limited in what snacks they can provide here at school to students. Due to the various allergies on campus, teachers can have Veggie Straws or Skinny Pop (both regular flavor) as classroom snacks.
Most students bring their own snacks daily, but occasionally some forget, which is why we have some on hand. As you can imagine, we can tend to run out of snacks if we have a week where lots of kiddos have forgotten to bring a snack. We would appreciate anyone who is able to send in snack-sized bags of Veggie Straws (sea salt) or Skinny Pop. Thank you!
We have the most INCREDIBLE PTA here at Glenhope. Please check out their website to learn more!
From our principal, Dr. Griffin:
Our community has always supported our school in so many ways, for which we are very grateful. One of the traditions that has long been in place is our annual Greenback giving campaign, which we use to supplement the budget provided by the district.
Many years ago, Glenhope parents stated their preference for an opportunity to donate rather than having students participate in fundraisers. That has continued to be our practice, and we have been able to supplement classroom and building requests through our community’s generosity. There is now an option for you to donate by using a credit card through the district’s RevTrack system.
Gifts made to Glenhope should be tax deductible (per IRS tax code section 170), but you will want to confirm with your tax advisor. We will furnish a form acknowledging your contribution. Some corporations match donations, so I would encourage you to investigate that possibility as well. We received an estimated additional $4,000 - 5,000 last year from matching corporate donations.
As a reminder, we have two snack times during the day. Please be sure to send nut-free (NO PEANUTS OR TREE NUTS) snacks.
Thank you for keeping everyone safe!
Please make sure your child comes to school prepared each day with a charged ipad. Please write names on lunch boxes, water bottles, ipad chargers, and head phones.
Please make sure you complete the District Background Check every year. Forms must be completed and approved before you will be allowed to volunteer at the school or on field trips.
We'll keep this section in here for a while as we find it to be an important one!
We would like to provide additional support at school if your family is experiencing difficulties at home.
If your child is coming to school after a difficult night, morning or weekend please email me with the words "Handle with Care." Nothing else will be said or asked. This will let me know that your child may need extra time, patience, or support during the day.
Most Fridays we will go to the school library in the morning. 2nd graders can check out two books at a time, and should bring books back to check out new ones on Fridays as they finish books.
Thanks for your help in making sure books come back each Friday. Better yet, make a habit of storing the library books in your child's backpack so they are always there!
